Coast Guard

I am considering joining the coast guard. I was wondering if anyone has done this or knows anyone who has done this. My one concern is not being able to surf once I am in service. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks

I surf regularly with a guy that works for the Coast Guard. You just have to be willing to take the breaks as they come. He was originally posted in Cali and got to surf everyday on his 1.5 hour sports lunch. Then he was posted in Maine and surfed freezing cold point breaks. I think the current assignment in DC is the worst with the 3 hour commute to the beach, but he gets it done. From everything I have heard it is a great job and have considered it myself. You may not get to surf as much as if you work at a surf shop, but you will make more money, have a more interesting job, and get to travel.

im thinking about joining the coastguard too and my brother is in the navy and he gets to surf but its all about what you do when you get in

im in the navy, and i go and surf on the weekends. there are numerous coastguard stations all over the east and west coasts that are close to good spots. it all depends on how well you do when you go to your school. if you do good, you will probebly get a chance to pick where you want to go.

Hey man....I am leaving for the USCG boot camp in Cape May, NJ in a little over a week. I am pretty bummed we haven't really gotten any hurricane swell yet here in OC, MD and it doesn't look like Ingrid is going to bring much. Definitely won't have any free time in boot camp to surf but from everyone I have talked to they seem to love the CG. They say once you get settled in after you graduate boot camp and wherever you end up, more free time opens up to surf or do whatever else. Although right out of boot camp I have heard you may have to be assigned to a large cutter for a month or two on a tour. So I don't know how much time you will have to surf at that time. But I'll find out everything for myself in the months to come so i'll keep in touch.

Not being able to surf is hindering a HUGE decission like that? I think you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

Hip...my priorities are in place. Thank you for your concern. Surfing is a big part of my life, if I had to spend a long time not surfing, I would be miserable. I am sure I am not alone when I say this.

I know what you mean. The Coast Guard is a serious commitment. If you really want to join...don't let the question of surfing hinder you. You'll have your time. Trust me...I'm a fishing/shore fanatic and couldn't imagine not having the option to be on the water for a long period of time. Good Luck.

No the recruiter did not say anything about a tour in Iraq. However, it is a possibility to be deployed to Iraq. Here is a link to an article about the USCG's presence and role in the Iraq war. It is outdated because it is an article from 2004 but atleast gives you an idea of what the USCG is currently doing/maintaining in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea.

Seriously tho, you should check into this, and take into account what you feel about the possibility of you ending up over there... I'm not speaking from any point of view, but I know that for a few of my friends which have been in different branches of the military, getting out was MUCH harder then the recruiters made it out to be. Not talking about early release or anything either, I'm talking about the extensions they received from the man in charge. Be concouss of the times we are living in is all I'm saying. Good luck in whatever decision you make.;)

I am doing the college program. They pay for your last two years of college. By the time I am graduated we better be out of Iraq.
