yeah, i split my time between manhattan and eastern LI. when in manhattan, i take the 6 train to the A to far rockaway, change at broad channel for the shuttle. the looks you get in the subway are priceless  overall, a little over an hour commute and the cheapest means of getting to and from the beach ($2 each way)

I always take the L and switch to the A at Broadway Junction.

I have recently moved here from Ocean City, MD. If anyone ever wants to go sometime, shoot me a PM.

there are pylons that go out offshore but u always know where they are because they start on the beach and go strait out to sea and they are about 2 ft tall. the surf can be amazing in the rockaways, i love it there

Rockaway is a decent surf spot, but there are some hazards, including the local neighborhood. I go to High School in Manhattan so I've found it faster to hop the LIRR to Long Beach. Safer spot, better waves and quicker from Manhattan. Hope that helps.

I surfed in Brooklyn the other day!

RBNY isn't that bad... I live here (B81st)... If youre talking about the Hammels (the projects) they rarely bother anyone, they're use to surfers.

I like being able to walk out my door and walking to the boardwalk, across the sand and paddling right out...

I've never had a problem there except with the cops. They gave me a ticket around 90th by the projects. There is NOT a street sweeping sign posted on the whole block, so I fought it in court, the law says they only need one sign every mile or so. Screwed out of $45. by the man!

I have been going to manhattan for years so I know that part of the city but I will be moving there next month. I will be living downtown. How sketchy are the neighborhoods around rockaway and what do you do with all of your stuff? Board bag, clothes, etc? Any stealing issues? Please get me dialed in.

Cheers

the beach side of town doesn't seem bad, every time that i've gone i just left my stuff on the beach, most people do that. no idea if things get stolen, i'm sure its happened

Bingo.

I grew up in Rockaway Beach, and I never had a problem. Head west (uptown) if you want few issues. Head beyond where the boardwalk ends (126th Street) and walk the sand to peaceful beaches, and decent locals.

Downtown..... you are at your own risk.

Don't be an idiot and bring your cell phone and valuables to Rock and leave them unattended on the beach. You don't do that anywhere in NYC. I keep my Metrocard, money and keys on me in the water. I bought a waterproof container that I can keep under my wettie or in my pocket during the summer.

I got my backpack stolen off the beach last Christmas. All it had were my street clothes, so the next day, I bought a new bag and clothes from Salvation Army for about $20. It gets super crowded in the summer, and thefts are rampant then. If you don't have a place to lock up your stuff, expect to get robbed. Just use your head and keep your losses minimal.

I'm in Brooklyn and take the Franklin C and get on the A @ Utica. If the shuttle is cooperating, Rockaway is a little under an hour. If I've got more time I'll look to other less crowded spots, but you can't beat Its convenience factor. Also super chill, despite the MASSIVE crowds. Never had any issues.

Yeah I had a bunch of stuff gone through by a group of thugs on the beach in broad daylight in front of the jetty about 2 years ago. I saw it happening, but the waves were pretty good for LI standards that day so I almost didnt even go in to do anything about it. I managed to chase them away, thankfully they werent packin heat

just watch your back, and keep everything you need on you if at all possible, as someone else suggested:)

alot of times if you stick you **** in tight under the boardwalk its alot harder for the thieves to find. you can do alot of moving sand around under there to so its completely covered from plain sight and only you know where it is. you might get some sand in your stuff but its better than getting it nicked

I keep all of my valuable stuff on me at all times (metrocard, keys and cash).

As I live in Manhattan, I think a board bag is a necessity for the subway. I use a bike lock and lock the board bag to any part of the boardwalk. Sure someone can cut the fabric, however, they would probably just go to another bag that isn't locked up.
