I think having people around for a few months is very entertaining, i mean after isolation for 9 months it's nice to have some fun there's always something going on, if you want to see guidos drive by the surf club any given summer night in ortley, nj it is so steryotyped it is hilarious. Anyway its not like people that come down know how to surf that well and the dudes that are in all year will still get all the waves anyway, plus it's light out at 500am and dark by 900 so you could get 2 3-hour sessions a day with sun and warmth. The only thing that sucks about summer is lack of swell but when it comes it is the best I think. So I like having both around but again only for the limited time there here trust me September is great month too.

well I'm a BENNY from Staten Island that works in South Jersey and spends alot of time down there in the off season fishing and surfing...

I'm far from a guido... and cant stand them myself...

BUT... when people from NJ get nasty and try to screw with me cuz I'm a Benny... that gets me pissed off... especially when half the people that live in South Jersey moved from New York within the past 30 yrs...

I usually respond with... Go F'off PINEY... but I try to make friends at first...

cuz I do understand the frustration of people moven in on your turf... Tourists from North Jersey and New York whole only know that the beach exists from Memorial Day to Labor Day. An easy way to determine if someone is a BENNY's is that they will typically say "I'm going down the shore" instead of "to the beach". BENNY's are called SHOOBIES south of LBI.

A Guido is a greasy looking North Jersey or New York guy typically Italian or Latin or wannabe of either who tawk wit dat Noo Yawk accent, wear gold chains and wife beaters, and act like rude idiots getting in fights at D'Jais in Belmar.

Guido's are BENNY's so the poll is kinda pointless.

PINEY's are rude redneck white trash South Jersians and the name is taken from the Pine Barrons. However it's a useful term when any south Jersey local is being rude.


Personally I can do without any and all rude people no matter where they are from. Unfortunately they all flock to the beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day and even the rude locals act more rude than normal during that time. It's an unfortunate necessity for the economy of the beach towns and even the inland towns that thrive on that summer revenue, but I wish anyone who doesn't like the beach enough to visit it in the winter would stay away in the summer too.

Dago and wop are actually ethnic slurs specific to all Italians which date back to the early to mid 1900's when Italians were immigrating to the US, unlike guido which is a slur based on a specific look or style that one chooses to take on. Tough, in my area we don't get many Guidos. Thats more of a Seaside / South Jersey type thing. In Central Jersey we get a lot of Bennys. There is a difference believe it or not. The Benny comes from the New York City area and Long Island - drives a giant Mercedes, does not care if the light is red, does not care if the person has the right of way and makes a left turn nearly causing an accident, gives you the finger for your high beams while in actuality your using your low beams, drives into the wrong lane from 3 cars back to cut you off while your trying to make a left turn waiting for the oncoming traffic to pass - nearly getting everyone into an accident, ect ect. Benny's love Deal, NJ. Benny's are typically Syrian Jews as well, where as Guidos are typically some obnoxious Italian guy. But these terms are definitely interchangeable

I have not been there since last summer when I was in town visiting my cousin, her husband stayed home with the kids and wanted to go....ugh, I was in total disgust, it was like Gotti boy central there with the bad knock off designer shirts buttoned at the navel, the blow out hair cut and rock hard gel, and self tanner. I graduated from Towson University and these wanna be Guido trash kids litter that campus trying to be club promoters at **** college bars and slipping roofies in freshman girls drinks. The last place I wanted to see them was when I was away from campus. I hate them trying to be "balla" or act connected when everyone knows they work for a cement company or lost their loan officer job because of the current real estate market.

I blame that stupid Gotti Boy show for making it popular outside of the Bronx and North Jersey to dress and act like these tool boxes.

Yeah guidos do exist - they made up like 95% of my high school and town I grew up in - pathetic thing is that most of them weren't even Italian - duuuuuh.

I think guidos and visitors are amusing - we get citidiots to Long Beach - the folks who drag their surfboards in on the A train every weekend. Some of them are really cool, some of them are downright lethal..complete with burying their kids diapers in the sand, etc. You won't find them in the Mid-Atlantic area, because NJ/MD/DE is considered another planet to them. :p

And the college kids throw so kick ass parties. They occasionally block the surf a bit, but for the most part they are aware of our (surfers/bodyboarders) existence when they swim at blackballed beaches. So I don't really mind them, they are down for a good time, who can fault them for that?

But there is one huge positive. When I'm sitting at Belmar 16th ave Pizza, and watching them all walk past down to DJais, its pretty freakin funny. Like a parade of meathead clowns.

Well you could do that, or just go out somewhere else is what we do. But reality is that any of the prime places are now infested with guidos and bennys. Look at Bar A.. The only acceptable night is tuesday night which is beat the clock night cause all the locals all go out there. Weekends, forget it cuz everyone is down from up north. Jenks, a straight benny/guido place during the weekends. All of seaside is top notch the worst place because of all these people even tho i have heard it has been getting a slight bit cleaner. Belmar and pt. pleasant are now going to where seaside was years back with the upper north scum ( referring to the "cockiness" fights that ) Like how do u tell a cop u fought someone because they were in your face? Your best bet like you said is house parties as long as the neighbors are cool, and/or local bars that are not big time places to go.

I was in Deal, Asbury, and LB on Saturday and Sunday. I didn't have any sightings, but maybe I wasn't close enough to Belmar or Seaside. I'm definitely not complaining though.

I agree both types are the worst. If i had one to keep it would be the Piney at least they are some what local and grew up going to LBI and south.

I was actually talking to my buddy about this while sitting on the beach this weekend in Sea Isle. He is a local from Sea Isle and I said what is going on here this is the worst summer I've seen for these dudes (and gals). It's bascially becoming Belmar. Every year they just migrate farther south.

It does make for a good laugh and conversation piece while sitting on the beach though. They should stick with wearing jean shorts and wife beaters since typically the board shorts they buy are skin tight and dont fit. This was by far the funniest thread.

Tough, in my area we don't get many Guidos. Thats more of a Seaside / South Jersey type thing. In Central Jersey we get a lot of Bennys. There is a difference believe it or not. Guido's are like these guys http://www.guidofistpump.com/guidos3.jpg - probably coming from northern New Jersey. The Benny comes from the New York City area and Long Island - drives a giant Mercedes, does not care if the light is red, does not care if the person has the right of way and makes a left turn nearly causing an accident, gives you the finger for your high beams while in actuality your using your low beams, drives into the wrong lane from 3 cars back to cut you off while your trying to make a left turn waiting for the oncoming traffic to pass - nearly getting everyone into an accident, ect ect. Benny's love Deal, NJ. Benny's are typically Syrian Jews as well, where as Guidos are typically some obnoxious Italian guy. But these terms are definitely interchangeable

I dont agree with people saying shore vs. beach means they are a benny. Yes, you should say beach but saying you are "going to the shore" basically means you are actually going to the beach at the edge of the shore/shoreline.

How about when I went to the "North Shore" to pipe, sunset and waimea, sounds same to me. Anyway, I guess people refer to "going down the shore" ever since signs went up welcoming people to the jersey shore.--but who knows.

They refused to get replenishment, don't need to explain that do I?; because of their unique lifestyle, they keep the town low-density residential and not the low-grade daytripper overcrowded tourist trap that it could be; they don't press their town to charge for parking and beach tags like everywhere else, they generally don't come down during the week and don't even drive on Saturdays leaving the roads clear for everyone else, they don't crowd up normal bars and restaurants b/c they're kosher, etc. as a surfer, WTF more could you want from them? Yes they are rich - I guess they shouldn't buy the big homes and high end cars which they can afford - just so jealous outsiders won't feel like they're "flaunting" it.

The only reason you can surf in Deal is because a former local shop owner had a surfing organizations lawyers in court at Deal when he received a ticket for surfing and the laws were changed ,that was not that long ago. The residents of Deal wanted the beach replenishment but did not want to provide the public access that the town would have had to supply that came with it. Funny I wasn't the person who brought up the subject of money, but I was wondering if those cars from j&m leasing and global leasing get discounted because they don't have blinkers.

Agreed completely. I went to Deal twice this past weekend (Memorial Day weekend) and it was as laid back and uncrowded as every other summer weekend. The homes may be ridiculous and completely not "beachy" but they're usually vacant. We are always towel-changing on the street or in front of homes and we never have problems. You can park and access the beach for free and even bring your dog along if you want. Their religious beliefs are totally irrelevant when it comes to surfing. Don't hate!

Let guidos and bennys on the beach as long as they have respect in the water and on the beach I could careless. Guidos are rarely seen in the water once it's shoulder or head high so whatever. Bennys are bennys, but most are simply just trying to learn how to surf and cant fault them for that as long as they are not causing disasters on the peak or take off zone.

Plus, September is right around the corner boys and then we'll be back to empty beaches and much less crowded lineups

I agree that the main objective is to portray status, but its within their community, not intended for outsiders. They compete internally and from my experiences, could not care any less what any Gentiles, especially non-Syrians, think of them. I won't speak with regards to all of them, but some of them are legitimately wealthy - very wealthy. during HS i used to work for a landscaper and all we did was lawns in deal/ocean/elebron/west long branch and most of the houses were empty inside except for some beach chairs and tv sittin on a milk crate i know they would rent furiniture when they had parties it was rather funny but hey to each his own

I have to say I dont mind the noise and crowds when the Shoobies ( That SNJ's term) & Guidos come down. They are here just enough to want labor day to come and it breaks up the Post Nuculare Fallout most of the Summer towns in NJ have in the winter.

a lot of benny's are annoying, but most of the guidos just flat out bother me. benny's by far i would take over guidos any day of the year.

I'm really excited to find out by reading these posts what I would be called. Found out I wasn't a benny, but I'm only at Stone Harbor from Memorial Day to early October and I come from Maryland. Is there a term for that?

And believe it or not I'm better than some of the locals I surf with. Despite what my previous avatar might tell you.

My grandparents still live in Southern Monmouth County. I have been coming to the beach and surfing all of my life at the same spot. I get up early and make the hour long journey to the beach where I surf several times a week, even in the dead of winter. I never litter or cause any problems. I don't take waves that are not mine, I wait my turn. With that said I am also a pretty good surfer seeing as I go out all through the winter. What are you thoughts on my situation? I am curious to see.

Back in the day when I was still seeing my dad, and my grandmother was still alive she lived in Brielle just a couple of blocks from the Brielle Rd drawbridge. It was my grams summer home for many years until the early 90s when she moved there permanently until she died in 99. So I spent a lot of time there as a baby I guess between 83-85 in the summer. Every summer from about 95 until 2000 I spent there with my gram, and dad, and just my dad after she died. He would always say even though I was from Bergen County, and lived in Bergen County that technically I wasn't a benny, because my family owns a house in town, and pays taxes there. When he was a kid he grew up in Bergen County, but his parents owned the house there even though he did not live in town year round, so he said he didn't consider himself a benny, and no one called him one ever.

So basically I was a loner I only hung out with my dad, and he was fun to hang out with, and there was only 19 years between us, I never made any friends down the shore, but most of the kids knew my face over the years even though they never saw me in school. So I don't get too wrapped up in the benny thing no more. I am trying to figure out the official benny/shoobie line. In Monmouth County it's all strictly benny's as it is in most Ocean County towns, but I have heard shoobie a few times on LBI. Everywhere in Atlantic, and Cape May it's all strictly shoobie. I used to live in Sea Isle, so I used to hear nothing, but shoobie.

You would be called a "Slocal" or "Shoobie" for summer local. I used to live in OCNJ for the summers and that was what I was called. Now I'm a local, but I'm much farther north of OCNJ. :D
