Buoy #44009 said the water temp was 66 at 7:50AM but it says it's jumped to 76.8 at 2:50PM. Micah, any explanation? Maybe the surface temperature just changed considerably because of the heat or possibly a swell direction change and it picked up some of the gulf stream? Just curious.

77 degrees - holy crap - thats awesome!!

Its got to be an ocean current change. Maybe a branch off of the Gulf stream - seems very possible. Check out the ocean temp maps, you'll see the gulf stream kind of meandering this way.

water temp still at 73 this afternoon on 44009. While this is 20 miles off the coast, it may be time to bust out the board shorts!

We were out this weekend with rash guards, boards shorts, no gloves...still kept the booties. It was REAL nice :)

why the hell are you wearing booties with a rash guard and board shorts. Thats funnier than an hippo humping a palm tree. vb has been in board shorts for 2 weeks now, but unfortunately we had to lose the booties a while back. I do have a quick question though; How do you keep your booties from filling up with water??? Do you tape them to your leg or something????

im pretty sure that water is supposed to go in the booties, then your body temperature heats up the water

Hmmm...cause the water was still a bit chilly and extremities are the first to feel it/go...the booties just help a bit in terms of taking the edge off. I would think you would be out of all your gear in VB...that's quite a bit south. My booties actually have a velcro ankle area that you can attach your fins too and this also keeps the water from rushing in and out of the area...no need for tape or hippos or anything ;) But you still need some water to enter to stay ideally warm. I think wearing a wet suit in 100 degrees and having a heat stroke looks funnier personally.

If the waves are super small and I can walk out to the break, and everything is just splashing around my ankles and knees, I tend to forego fins in the summer for 2mm O'Neill Freak Sneaks instead of bare feet. I have radicular neuropathy in my feet, and I like to keep them covered.

So, Surfer16, when ESC said "booties", she might have meant reef shoes. Don't be such an a$$. There are booties and fin socks for every season.

After 15 years, I still don't understand this whole need for surfers to be critical of each other.

Trunked it sunday afternoon. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I got in the water until I blazed by them a few waves later on my big blue Takyama. Then they were just pissed ;)

Really? do you wear your booties outside the wetsuit? seepage is fine...a half pound of water in each boot is not.

Look--I have sensitive feet...I don't really care if I look ridiculous. It's not a fashion show.
No Biggie though...everyone is entitled to an opinion. The REAL point was that you can get away with shorts and a rash guard. Just glad the water is warming up finally in NJ :D

i went for a swim after work yesterday, in fenwick, and while cool, it was certainly trunkable/comfortable (no thermometer, but i would guess upper 60's-70). by the time we get waves, and assuming there is no upwelling, trunks should be the call throughout the midatlantic.

Yeah a wetsuit is definatly not needed anymore unless you have a low tolerance for the cold. Although warm to me is once the water gets to the upper 50's. lol
