No brah....you are actually wrong....asbury is still the 5hit hole it was years ago. I live there i know. Crime is still here. My GF sister just got held up with a knife to her neck last week. Serious too i'm not even joking.... The guy jumped in her car as she was leaving work and told her to drive him to the boardwalk in asbury. Lucky enough she is ok and the guy got caught and is in jail. People get shot in broad day light in asbury. When it's dark...don't walk the streets.
To the OP.....As for surfing asbury has some good spots....one in particular. "the pipe" my favorite....just get to the empress hotel....don't go in tho unless you are gay. the break in front of the hotel fires. you will see the sewage pipe....yes sewage...dirty jerz. what can i say?
the beach is still a 5hit hole too.....how can you say it's beautiful? Yes they are re-building the boardwalk. But, lets face it Asbury is Asbury. Same people.... same vibes...maybe it looks a little dif but it's still the same old Asbury.

I def. agree that there are a lot of shady characters in asbury. I don't know if any of you have heard about madison marquette rebuilding the boardwalk and some of the area around it. They are putting a lot of up scale retail such as clothing stores and places to eat. At the moment the city is still not a great area but within 5-10 years alot of the people who cause the crime and things could be driven out due to higher prices and upscale living.
The surf is still pretty solid regardless.

I lived in AP on 3rd ave by comstock from the time I was born until i was 11 and it was time for middle school (parents thought it might be in my best interest to get me out of the school district). East of kingsley and cookman may apprear to be nice and sweet with all the new shops and restruants but lincoln village, springwood, and bangs ave. are not going anywhere. There still is alot of crime granted the police have stepped up patrols along ocean ave and cookman to keep the out of town clients(money) safe. The city is going to need alot of time to completely turn around propably another 25 years. That will most people enough time to forget about the '68 riots and if the redevelopment continues and the developer does not go bankrubt(work already stopped on the espenansa) on the same ocean ave property that the last developer did in '84. Most families are going to aviod buying there because of the school district and crime rate.

yeah., dude you hit the head on the nail. At least 25 years if not more...haha like you said springwood and bangs will never change. Also the Esperanza big multi million dollar condos going up. But who's buying? Noone! Nobody want's to live in a nice condo surrounded by poverty. School district is a joke too.
OP - If you need a place to live....check out some surrounding towns that border AP. You may find a gem. Otherwise you have been warned.

they should start with paving the ocean ave road its like driving through a minefield, i've always wondered what the surf is like in asbury and that's all i've ever done, its probably safer to park by 8th ave and just walk down the beach next to the water with syringe protecting booties and a knife at least thats the vibe i get when ive driven through there. . .asbury used to be really nice until the riots and the deinstintutionalizing of the mentally ill right? there must be an interesting history

Yeah, I forgot about that when marlboro mental closed it had a great effect on the AP community. I belive that happen shortly after we moved out i believe in '88. As a kid growing up there you don't recongize the situation your in until you move out and see that things that happen in AP are no longer acceptable in other locations.

Yeah most of them moved to Ocean Grove/Asbury after Marlboro closed down...and some are still here.. It's creepy sometimes seeing these people walk the streets. They are like zombies.

This guy actually made me sign up! I have lived in AP for the last 4 years. I love it! It has come a long way from the 80’s. I lived here then and that was when it was complete trash. Its got a few more years but it will completely turn… its to far along not to now. As for his friend getting mugged… BS! No criminal would highjack a car and tell the driver to take them to the boardwalk… you know, the place where there are 40 cops per 5 people… come on. I hope I see you on Monkle Beach!
Oh… 8th ave (Monkle Beach) goes off when its good. But it breaks from Loch Arbor to 1st ave when its good. Just gotta be after 5 or after summer. Life Guards suck if their not hot or saving your life!

Dam homie..you need anger management.
As far as Asbury goes..the whole esperanza thing and the condo' along the north east end of cookman... Is anyone buying those things? I just don't see it working...who want to pay all that money for a condo yet be holed up in it. Living in your own million dollar prison . Until all those low rent slums along ocean ave are cleaned out/demolished...the developer will wishing he never got started. The key is to buy at the right time...just when developers lower prices to cut loses and when the neighborhood starts to look brighter. Seriously...though demographically...it's an sh!t-hole.
As far as the waves.....i've seen it firing and not too crowded.

I was born & raised in Long Branch and have lived in Allenhurst and Bradley Beach. I moved away 9 years ago but I still go up there on a regular basis. Since I've been away for a while and live in a city with much bigger problems than Asbury so it always amuses me when locals complain about how bad it is. I mean, yeah, it's bad compared to Oakhurst or Rumson . . . but it''s kind of skewed when your points of comparison are the some of the safest places in the country.
I mean, you're moving to a city, you shouldn't really be surprised to find drugs and violent crime. It's in one of the 40 richest counties in the country, all those frat dudes gotta buy their blow somewhere and Long Branch ain't like it use to be.
When i moved down here my neighborhood was so-so. Then after three years of renting in the same place the restaurants and pubs started popping up, the crime went down, I couldn't go a day without bubble tea or bahn mi, and I didn't want to leave. Except by then I couldn't afford to buy there and my landlord kept raising my rent. My new neighborhood is a lot like my old neighborhood was when i first moved there . . . except now I own my place.
Point is, if you have the money to buy in Asbury and you don't - you're an idiot. Less than 25% of households have school-aged kids. No one cares about school districts anymore. It's all about DINKs and empty-nesters and being able to walk to the bar, walk to the store, walk to the train.
Asbury is going to be one incredible place. If I could live there and not have to commute an hour each way to work, I would. It's not by bag so I don't.
So if you're going to be working or surfing in Asbury get some street smarts and use 'em. In a couple of years you can let your guard down.

...wow, this got pretty intense. seems like an interesting place with tons of heritage and really exemplifies the new jersey that i have come to love so dear.
but the thing is....come the end of august the offices are moving to bay head.
anybody got info on the surf there?
its like a half hour south of AP, by point pleasant...all i know about either places is that i've gotten blacked out at jenk's a couple times and had a blast.
thanks again amigos.

I don't know about surfing in Point Beach or Bay Head but the Manasquan inlet is right across the bridge from Point Pleasant. If you're moving up that way you'll probably find renting an apartment in Point Beach or Point Boro cheaper than up in Asbury. Bay Head and Mantoloking are really pricey.
I prefer the area between Asbury Park and Point Pleasant but it wouldn't hurt to check out everything between Asbury and Seaside Park and even across the bay to Brick and Toms River. Just keep in mind that from Point Pleasant and south the traffic can get really bad in the summer time and the guidos are off the chain. Further north it's not so bad.
There's also the train that ends in Bay Head and the town is small enough that you can walk anywhere in 10 or 15 minutes or lock up an old cruiser at the station. When I lived in Red Bank I used to take it to work in Belmar every friday morning in the summer because when I got off of work the traffic was retarded and it would take me an hour to get home if i drove.
