Any sport that involves balance will help surfing. Knowing how to control your body is pretty damn important...

yoga helped me a lot in surfing and running, last year i couldnt touch my toes and now i can put my palms on the floor. It made me more limber and confident when i was surfing, and made me be a lot less sore after running. give it a shot

Yeah, I've done yoga for a number of years but wanted to try something a little more aggressive. been taking american kenpo for 2 months now and that is great but was curious to see if it affected my surfing (so far it hasn't).

Well... martial arts is cardio / strength mostly. Yoga on the other hand is completely different. It might not help the surfing, but its good for you, and if you dig it, keep at it.

im an amature boxer, 16, 6'4 and 150lbs, ever since i started boxing and working out it has helped my surfing alot, before i weighed 175lbs and benched pressed 125lbs, now im 25lbs lighter and bench 200lbs, it has trippeld my surf sessions and i dont really get sore anymore, I would stick with martial arts if i where you.
qi gong is whats up. not only do you work your body, you work your energy (qi, or chi for all you americans out there). i love coffee just like the next guy, but you don't get pumped on caffiene like you do on your own natural cultivated energy. if anyones intrested, p.m. me and I can tell you a book you can order off amazon for less than five bucks that'll change your life forever!!!

6'4", 150 lbs? You are one skinny dude...........
As far as martial arts helping your surfin goes...........At least if someone cuts you off you can jump off your board and drop kick them in the head.

what he said +1, I was taking boxing classes for about 6 months before they closed the program down and I was probably in the best shape of my life then. Try hitting a heavy bag with one arm for three minutes straight, or jump roping, a lot harder than you'd think.

Good advice as long as you don't have any spinal problems. Yoga is amazing, the light, positive feeling it gives you mirrors the one you gain from gliding down a few waves....
But, if you have any disc problems it will let you know real quick. Yoga puts immense pressure on the spine and it will set off any existing problems. If you have none, definately do it. It will enhance many things other than your surfing. The main thing with it is to focus on your breathing. The expansion of your lungs does the work. It lengthens your muscles, which obviously leads to an increase in strength.
Works wonders for the mind and attitude also. If you go this route, research it and make your own program. Just make sure to cover all basis of your body. Just like surfing, it's all about balance, so whichever area you are not covering will fold under pressure.

Haha Eddy Gordo from Tekken.
But as for martial arts I have been doing jiu jitsu and cross training in boxing for a few years. Definitely helps from getting too winded on the paddle out. On top of that it's just good to have self-defense from all the d**k's in this world. Help yourself get respect by knowing a martial art.
