What's the furthest from home any of you have gone for a surf?

The furthest I have gone is the Outer Banks where I only had one session while i was there due to lack of swell. I've surfed CB maybe twenty times, Masonboro a hundered times, and WB probably in the thousands.

So that's pretty pathetic. Someone show me up!

I've got my entire life to travel and will when I am able. :D

lol. I'm the same way. I surf my few spots all the time. I've traveled to the Carribean twice but wasn't able to surf either time. I've never even ventured to OB.

I would definitely recommend heading to Puerto Rico. Its a cheap flight and you don't need a passport. The waves from Rincon up to Aguadilla are great. A lot of people speak english and the liquor is cheaper than the beer.

Stay away from Jobos... The waves aren't worth the locals.

Everyone else was really cool at every other spot though.

I think Puerto Rico and Costa Rica are great first time surf trips for any east coaster. They are safe, easy, and relatively inexpensive. The only downfall is that rental cars are highly recommended if you want to get the most out of the trips. This is both good and bad as it adds to cost, but gives you the exploration aspect to the trip.

Nicaragua is fun. Other than the superfast paddling local kids who snake waves it was amazing.

I've been as far as Indo: Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa. I spent a month there the same year as the bali bombing. The sari club was right by our hostel. If you can't stay more than two weeks it's not even worth the flight time. Takes like 3 days to get over the jet lag.

Best bang for the buck is Nicaragua or PR. I like to travel with my wife, so PR is great. Rincon is super friendly for the non surfing wife (spouse). Maria's, Domes, Sandy beach all have a bar in front of the surf breaks. That and the breaks are within 20 minute drive of the airport (BQN-Aquadilla).

Costa Rica is over rated for the travel, but the waves are WAY more consistent. Not really friendly to the nonsurfing lady-types. Same with Nicaragua. I have heard Panama is really nice and the people are very welcoming.

Werd, one of my friends and very close to one of my good buds was in the Sari Club at the time and did not make it. He was a ripper out of Central Florida. The two traveled to Indo a bit, lived on the GoldCoast in Aussie for a couple years sending Email after email out from G-land pits to N straddie paddles over great whites only to have no one there and perfect A frames. That area of the surfing world is so mental.

Haven't been quite that far, but I def. see a schooner traveling in indo very soon in the crystal ball. Next stop Peru or Ecuador.

Sorry about your friend. Swell Info used the word safe at the beginning of his reply- has anyone here been hassled or endangered in a foreign land?

ohhhh G-Land :D:D after seeing Kelly on that cobra in this months mag I think G-Land is up to #2 on my to do list, Waimea still #1 cause of its role in big wave development.

Now, to answer the question for myself only a few hundred miles up and down the right coast of the good old USofA because I have a limited budget being young. had a nice one a few weeks back just jumped in my car with my surf board all alone on a Wed after working all day; booked a hotel in Tampa for the Wed night then was out on in the water in the early AM for Ike swells of about 7-8' until lunchtime then drove all the way back home same day....

It is the farthest. The week I was there was in March. The waves were basically flat except a few reef breaks a 1/2 mile paddle out. I was wanting to see Pipeline go off but no dice. I surfed Haleiwa Bay, Sunset, Wakiki, Waimea Bay, and Back doors with a longboard. The surf experience there is very intimidating. There are dead surfer memorials lining the beach, the reefs are either razors or poisoness. A lot of the locals are on speed and will steal your board right off the truck, especially rented ones. I had fun at the Hostel with the multi international surfers visiting. I will probaly go again but this time check swells first!

That sound's pretty sick. What was intimidating about the surf there? The waves or the people? And what size longboard were you on?

I can't wait to travel for the first time. I want to surf a point break so bad!

Baja. Minus the waves, hands down was the worst trip of my life. Got robbed by gangbangers and had to pay off 3 fedarales at a whopping 150 bucks a piece! Had explosive shats the whole time I was down there and a week after. Be sure you go with someone you know who KNOWS the area and the right people. We surfed K-38 for 2 days and another break about 10 miles away. Water was warm and the surf was good. That's about the only positive I can say bout that trip.

Hawaii is the farthest I've gone. Only surfed two days there. I've also spent two summer is Santa Cruz California. This past summer we had consistant chest to head high waves for almost a month and a half and always super clean there. It was definatly a treat being from the East Coast.

Intimidating??? I thought I explained the graves and memorials of dead surfers!!! And poison reef sticking up where you are not aware of. There are enough worries in the ocean without that. Size doesnt matter silly rabbit! :p But a 9'1" was what i had.

Mexi-Feds will threaten to throw you in jail just because you have a board with you, especially if you're American. They will either arrest you or you could pay a "fine" to keep you out of jail. It's no fun when you're the outsider. I'm making plans to go to India next year.

that sucks id tell them to jsut chase me and run over the border and tell the american feds whats going on down there. But im making plans to go next year down to puerto rico whith some friends, for like a week to two weeks. but this past summer i when i went to costa rica with the same group of friends and parents we had fun good surf which is of course cause its costa but the food was amazing and at the end of the whole trip we couldnt shut up about the best waves of the days or who had the gnarlest wipeout and so on so im pretty excited for this coming trip.

You're gonna tell them to chase you across the border? Obviously you have never come face to face with the Mexican military, and what do you think he just walked across the border, hopped in the ocean and paddled out? Close enough where he could just run across the border? You watch too many movies..next time post something that actually makes sense..Anyway i've surfed Costa and southern California a few times

I've surfed around a bit, which makes me old and cynical, but the dangerous aspect is a good question. I'd say that I felt pretty uncomfortable at times cruising through Mainland Mexico. It's fine if your staying put there, but if your driving through, you need to be pretty savvy about what your doing. Baja has been getting trickier over the years, and you don't want to attempt that without research. It's not only the military and the banditos to watch out for, but it's very easy to get lost once you've turned off the Pacific Coast Highway. It's always a great trip there if you go smart, but mainland puts me off. Also, Northern California locals. Decent surf up there, but leave your friends and your camera at home. Nor Cal etiquite dictates no more than 2 surfers descend on a spot at one time. Kooks need not apply. Hawaii can go either way. The north shore obviously has dangerous waves (nearly drowned at Backyards on a tow day), but the locals can get heavy too. Don't bring a board to the west side. The philippenes, East Timor, and Shri Lanka have bands of militias operating in the regions. These are not reasons not to go to these destinations, but you should study them before going. I'm getting long winded here, but as for easy, affordable trips. I'd say Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, east coasters love it and you won't be alone. Puerto Rico is similar but far less consistent with crap trade swells between cold fronts. These spots are common rip off areas (much theft) and generally crowded. I've always loved Australia, and Europe. Indo is unbelievable. Try to stray off the beaten path, the world is a big place, spread out. Good luck

surfny,
Most people haven't been face to face with Mexi-Militia, and I can make a good guess that wb isn't even old enough to travel places like that on his own. Cut him some slack.

It's always smart to do research about the place you're goin. A buddy of mine went to Russia and said that it went smoothly. Also, learn a little of the language before you go. It can go a long way.
