With so many negative threads and posts... let's talk about something off topic...

What is your current job or jobs or career? How do you find time to surf? I'll start...

I just started doing Document Control for a Mechanical Construction company that is building the new casino, The Revel, in A.C. I work Mon-Fri. 7:30-4pm. Surf after work and a weekend warrior!!

excellent. hard to find meteorology jobs around the beach though. There are a bunch of NOAA jobs in DC area. If you are into forecasting, you can an occasionally find some scattered private business offering forecasting jobs scattered about.

I run Swellinfo. I surf when my boss (my inner consciousness) tells me I can take off. We get into fights frequently on the subject.

I been a plane, train, automobile/truck mechanic, HVAC mechanic, and now I'm in Health Care. Husband, father of four children, Pop Pop to two others. Theres just always been time for surf ! May not make every session now, (those were the days) but get it when I can !!! Seems like the older you get, the less time there is for the really really good stuff. Therefore I'm in the water on........(fill in my user ID here).

Medical student. School takes up a lot of time, but fortunately I also get weird hours off mid-day sometimes during the week which is great for a drive to the beach. Still usually manage to get in the water a few times a week when it's good. The long-term goal is to be an ER doc in a beachtown somewhere, working varied hours so I can get in the water as much as possible when the crowds are down. But I still have to finish med school and residency, so it'll be a while.

Went to a culinary school in philly and was a chef for awhile, philly, honolulu, then finally back at home at the DE beaches.(Don't ask why I left HI, cause I have no f###ing clue) I have a family now so I gave up working in a restaurant. Working at nights gave me no time with my family, but I am considering returning because my current job is so slow right now. I'm now doing all types of countertops (templating, fabricating, installing), but specializing in granite. I am not very happy with my job right now because like I said, it is very slow.Hey swellinfo, I'd love to get a job there, don't you need some help? Anyway, as far as finding time to surf, I keep an eye on swellinfo and just make time to go when it is going to be good.Nights and Weekends.

Looking now to apply to colleges. i am looking to go in as a declared atmospheric science major, but i'm having a difficult time finding a decent school outside of Vermont that offers that major. I have also apllied to Hawaii Pacific univesity as an oceanography major. If anyone can help me out with any good schools for atmospheric science that would be great.

I am an environmental specialist with a civil engineering company 2 blocks off the beach in Rehoboth. My bosses are boaters and fishing folk so they understand the conditions and water call. They are flexable. We have a shower at work so I can get wet in the morning, afterwork, 1/2 day Fridays and can get out if it is really good. I try and hold that some thought.

I'm a Spanish teacher and swim coach outside of greater Philly, beach patrol in the summer, travel during winter break. The Spanish comes in handy during those trips to Spain, Costa and Puerto. Teaching allows me long breaks, but they are fixed around holidays, when travel is expensive... I am a fan of Assateague and mostly surf Delmarva and occasionally Jersey shore.

University of Delaware has a great Environmental Science track with an atmospheric focus. I am an alumni. You have a nice 1.5 hour drive to the beach, but that will take you anywhere from Sandy Hook, NJ to Ocean City, MD in under 2 hours.

I believe Rutgers has a good atmospheric program. Your close to central NJ breaks there and close to NYC as well.

Most of my Friday evenings are spent driving 6 hours south to Hatteras. Occasionally I'll go to DE for a day trip but haven't this year. Due to the fact that I live in this cesspool, every vacation are trips based around surfing.

Starting November I take another assignment that involves building interactive web marketing applications for my company's marketing department. Millersville University (PA) has one of the best reputations in the US for it meteorology program. They also have a physical oceanography program that is up and coming. I'm doing the due degree program of both meteorology and physical oceanography and even though the beach is around 2.5-3 hours away, the programs quality is worth the drive. My friend and I have actually started a club that gathers surfers and other ocean lover alike. With some funding through the school, we take trips to the beach as often as possible. You should give us a look.

I am a musician in the Baltimore/DC area. I write music for tv, radio, film , and games. I have a pretty sweet job -- its full time with benefits (very important cause i'm also type 1 diabetic).
Of course, the drawback is that I have to be near baltimore/DC so I can only get to the beach on weekends, which isn't nearly as often as I'd like cause I also play gigs on weekends. What usually ends up happening is I have to plan far in advance when I'll go to the beach and just hope the waves cooperate.

Cool thread. I work for a publisher in NYC but consider the OCNJ breaks my home since I have a place there, essentially grew up there - so I hit it on the weekends mostly - though I've been known to hit it during the week if it is warm and good. I surf year round with the exception of the dark, dead of winter (sooo depressing)...

I haven't actually surfed much in NY or Northern NJ but want branch out for late fall/early winter DP's and weekend sessions in LI or Sandy Hook, NJ to cut down on travel time. If there are an NYC dawn patrol crews lurking on these boards send me a note.

Best thing you can do, instead of going to surf one weekend, take a trip along the breaks of Long Island, or the coast of NJ. You'll find what breaks are firing on that swell and gauge accordingly. I know in Monmouth County, there are enough breaks that will fire... when its almost any swell with a good size to it.

Don't worry, once you get out of school you'll work for a company that will want money from tax payers (gov't contractors), shmucks (attorney office, car dealerships), insurance companies (hospitals, gas stations), yourself and your community (teachers, police, etc.). gotta love economics....

Dude you have no idea... It kills me on the inside having to sell all these BS services to customers who know nothing about computers. We have to hit certain numbers and stuff or they come over and sit you down and tell you have your hurting the company as a whole and blah blah blah. Using scare tactics and pressuring people to close a sale which we don't even make commission on is just not a fun time for either party involved. I'm going to school for business admin. and I hope in my career I don't work for a company like that.

No other hobbies to interfere with surfing. Pick your favorite thing to do and dedicate your spare time to enjoying it all you can. Some people have too many interests and never get to fully enjoy any of them.

going to school for photography... hope that works out

Awesome. Good luck and stick with it.

Cool idea for a thread, it's interesting to see how diverse we are. Lot of students. My advice to you all is to stick with it because it's a constant struggle without a college degree, or a solid trade that you commit to. I'm speaking from experience, I'm really starting to have regrets (I'm 27). Be grateful and take full advantage because once you get into the work world, and the way our economy is going, it becomes all about getting by. Which sucks.

As far as I go, I work whatever job will pay my next month of rent & bills. Only thing I could really call myself is a cook, which ironically I'm not doing now. I catered and cooked in Baltimore in my late teens and early twenties and made nice money, but I've found that noone is really willing to pay you around here (ocmd) for hard work. Cooks are a dime a dozen in this town, and with the influx of foreigners that are willing to work for minimum wage (or less), well, it doesn't leave much of a reason to pay for hard work when you can get it for damn near free.

I'm lucky enough to have found a cheap place to live oceanside in ocmd. The glory of taking your coffee mug out to the dawn surf check is priceless...

Hah you are wrong there my friend knowledge is everything, Would you ever think that going green could save you money? Going green can save you money in places you would least expect it, all the while protecting your health and our fragile environment. I don't like surfing dirty waves, Do you?

I'm a Custom Cabinet Maker, That's my Real job. And my second Job is restoring classic VW's to their 60's and 70's luster, gotta say I'd rather be doing that instead of cabinet making, soooooo. If anybody knows people with classic VW's send them my way :)

Have six year old twins, 6 weeks of vacation and a wife that knows my ONLY mistress is the Ocean! Only time i take the wedding ring off!

I'm an industrial hygiene technician. Basically I run air samples at different places for different contaminants, asbestos, lead, heavy metals, etc. I work on a lot of asbestos projects doing inspections, making sure companies are going by the law. I have a B.S. in Environmental Science from UD. I worked in restaurants for many years, it took me like 8 years to get my degree. I lived it up, moved out to San Diego and worked in restaurants out there and surfed more than i worked. My advice to young people is put off the real world as long as possible, get that surfing in!!!!

I surfed just about every day for as long as i can remember. Then last year i started college in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. You can say it cuts into my surfing life a little. I get to snowboard everyday, but nothing compares to a good day of surf. Take it from me, if you are thinking of going somewhere far from the ocean, you better have another passion, cause if i didn't have snowboarding or skating or DJing to occupy my time i would go insane. I can't even watch surf video's. I just freak out and start looking up ticket prices to Cali, which are to expensive. Oh well, after this year its gonna be a life of surf for me, I'm moving somwhere with good consistant surf. Snowboarding good snow everyday is one thing, but surfing good waves all the time is about a thousand times better in my opinion. Every time i look at the swell charts and see the outer banks firing i wonder what the hell i am doing with my life, being literally thousands of miles away from any form of breaking wave. But all good things come with time i guess.
