Flagler in St. Augustine, FL. or Maine Maritime Acadamy if you want a career near the Ocean and don't mind the cold.

University of Rhode Island is one to think about if you don't mind cold water. I went to Old Dominion in Norfolk, VA. 20 minute ride to first street, short hop to the Outer Banks.

I went to Salve Regina Unv. in Newport RI. It's about 15 min east of URI over the bridge. All my classess overlooked the water. If you like cold water this is a pretty kick ass place to live. Check it out if you go up to URI.

There is not really good surfing at most schools on the east coast. It's very hit or miss. You need to go to california. Pepperdine Univ. :D

UC Santa Barbara The South end of campus sits on a nice little point break, and your only 15 to 20 mins away from Rincon. Major in criminal justice and get yourself out of trouble when you get caught sneaking around the ranch.

I would have to agree with the guy who said UNCW. I went to East Carolina University and I spent more weekends than I can count down in Wilmington just to surf. Prolly would have been cheaper just to go to school there. I have some pics from Wrightsville Beach that I swear don't look like they were taken in North America b/c of how clear the water is and how perfect the surf is. When it gets good down there, it gets really good. On the downside, it takes a pretty particular swell direction to work and like alot of other EC breaks, the outer banks blocks alot of the swell. Take the advice of the others, get to Cali if you can!!!

UNCW is good, UC Santa Barbara has its own surfing beach, UC Channel Islands is a 15-20 min. ride to some great Ventura county breaks, Also Florida Atlantic is right on the beach, East Carolina University is close to some good spots too

Yeah, UNCW would be hard to get into with a 3.0 unless you did it as a transfer student. The requirements are much lower when you transfer for some reason.

I go to salisbury and love it. Yea there are a few people here who have no idea what they are doing in the water. but i would say that there is a core group of about 20 guys and can hold their own and know what they are doing in the water.

I'll vouch for UNCW bc i currently go there... it's the ****...girls, warm water, decent waves, the outerbanks is close, and oh yeah the girls... I dont know about your gpa though, its gotten tough. I got in with a 3.8 and 1200 on a 1600 scale sat. I know a lot of cool kids from s. jersey and delaware too, good luck.

yeah it sucks, my friend got in with a 3.0 3 years ago and all of a sudden very college is impossible to get into, cuz this year there's the most seniors in high school then ever. but next year it might get easier to get into. hows eastern Carolina and Salisbury academically?

East coast, best surfing? find a school close to the outer banks, NC. If you have a little freedom, some extra money, and love surfing, do yourself a huge favor you will thank yourself for, for the rest of your life. University of Hawaii.

if you can go somewhere and get your grades up you should look at pepperdine.. my boy goes there its unreal. hot girls everywhere and you can check malibu from campus proper. one day last spring when i was out there we were hanging out in his dorm and just walked outside to see long shoulder high lines peeling right out front at malibu. its the real deal out there

You may want to consider PBA (Palm Beach Atlantic) in Palm Beach Fla. It is a Christian school with a few breaks nearby only a few blocks from the beach and many other good breaks a short car ride away. Two of my sons go to Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. The surf there is as good as it gets. The freshman dorm (Young Hall) was voted by Surfer Mag as the #1 dorm for freshman in the country.Young Hall sits on Sunset Cliffs and you look out over the Pacific each morning as you arise, hopefully to go to classes and then to surf. Point Loma has a 90 acre campus that sits directly on the Pacific and it is beautiful with 5 of the best breaks in So Cali right in front of your dorm a few steps away down the cliffs. Again, it is a Christian school with very good academics which is a plus for your future, but the short term benefit of having waves all year long is worth the plane ride. If you have to get on a plane to go to college then why not go to a consistent break with some much variety like Southern Cali. You can log or short board and get a great education and foundation for the rest of your life. The girls outnumber guys about 3:2 and many are very attractive and well grounded in their faith which your parents will appreciate.Sounds so good I think I will go back to college myself!

SU has gotten pretty tough to get into. Atleast a 3.0 gpa and 1700 on the new scale i think thats about right. I got in four years ago with a 3.3 and 1190 on sats. Also if you have over a 3.5 they wave the need for sats.

Ha that's funny. I was just a signature away from joining the marines and then realized I was a fool for thinking I could survive being land locked. Let alone a few other major deciding factors. Not saying I made the right move, but I now work for Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources and have plenty of leave time to take and go surf! To each his own, do what you want and Be Happy !

dude you need to get the hell off the east coast. But you need to stay far away from pepperdine!!! Unless you have like 40 G's a year to dish out. UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa barbara, if you got good grades from a privet school you wont have much trouble getting into those, and you would be a damn fool not to. UC Santa Cruz is really where you want to go though, tons of girls, the acceptance rate is like 80%, you got the most consistant surf in cali, all the bomb weed you can smoke, and the mascot is a giant banana slug!! what more could you want???
But dude im in college now and i am thousands of miles from the ocean in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I figure i can stick out 2 years here, if it means that i can live on the ocean for the rest of my life. and it seems it is going to work that way too, seeing as i am moving to Santa Cruz next year. So If your into snowboarding, there are tons of good colleges near mountains, and then you can always transfer after 2 years. Hey if may not be surfing, but at least i can go snowboarding on my time, not whenever right conditions line up, there snow is there all season long.

i applied to uncw and east carolina. i applied to east carolina just so i can get used to north carolina so when i transfer to uncw it will be easy. uncw is very difficult to get into these days for some reason. I do want to apply to some other schools for surfing. hawaii pacific university is right in honolulu so someone might want to check that out.

Wow guys.
Some real great students on here. You wont go far with less than 3.0 gpa.
Dont waste your time and money on college if you're going to half ass it and surf all the time. College is hard work and expensive.
Also, i believe for an out of state kid to go to any off the cali schools it would be hard to get in and it would be $40,000 yearly + travel costs.
Think a lil bit yao.
Thats just my 2 sizzentz..........HO

yea dude... UNC wilmington is right by wrightsville beach and masonborough island. masonborough can get real good around 6-8 ft and wrightsville always breaks pretty good during swell. Ive been down there to visit and am thinkin about goin there. but you could also go to university of delaware and just drive to masaquan, new jersey. thats my second choice, both not bad ideas.
yea I wouldnt really consider going anywhere that great if you only have a 2.5, pump it up some and work hard. I have a 3.8 and still cant get into uncw without a transfer from cape fear cc.

The ultimate mainland surf college, which is impossible to get into, is UC San Diego. The dorms overlook Blacks Beach, one of the best beachbreaks on the planet. Say no more.
Some one mentioned Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego. I would say no to that cause the locals at Sunset Cliffs are ****s anyway and they cant stand students. But if you have to settle for an east coast school try UNC Wilmington or one of the community colleges in Florida. I went to UD and made the drive to the beach every weekend. Or you could go into a trade, start your own business, and take off for surf whenever you want to.

Why would you drive from UDEL to manasquan, true this is a great break(my favorite in NJ and along with LBI..a street to stay unnamed), but its so far...i believe it is about a little more than 2 hours...go surf somewhere in delaware then...if you want to surf manasquan go to school at Monmouth...Monmouth it right on the water pretty much. Monmouth isnt more than a 30 min drive from manasquan

Salve Regina overlooks Ruggles partially, locals are total idiots up there, called the cops once because out of state plates were parked illegally on the road (you need a fishing pass to park there) just because he didn't want us surfing there. Guys would come out talking about sharks, saying how good third beach was (which is a bay) just jerks honestly. good wave though, go to the point on other side of 1st beach though even crazier. Or you can try URHigh. Enjoy.

I Honestly never thought you would need a pass but fewer sharks dont come up to the shore line i think its cold for them. But In My terms i agree

dude don't waste your money, with grades like that your going to end up at a private school that's going to set you back 80 grand . move to whatever beach you want to move to learn to bar tend or wait tables and get your degree online. and if you emancipate your self from your parents your going to score a ton of finical aid the only downside is you cant afford to get sick or injured unless you going to pay for insurance out of pocket .

I agree with Billabong. With a 2.5 GPA your choices are going to be limited. Find the beach you want to surf and get a job at McDonalds. Be sure to ask for the night shift so you can surf all day. You'll probably score a couple of meals a day as well. Just tell the chicks and other people you are in the resturant business.
