This is another exciting topic, lol. Head high is normally 6 foot and double o/h starts at 12 foot. Five foot is shoulder high using a standard 6 foot person, unless we want to weenie down to 5 foot standard by using the 3rd world mean height of men or round up/down to 5 foot for women. Think about it for a second... surf in the 8 to 9 foot range could be called almost double overhead. NOT. Just say how many feet high the face of the wave is and forget about comparing body part heights that are so inconsistent when there a range of menehunes to The Beef (that MD freak of nature for whom a 9' board is a shortboard) out there riding.

wave heights have always bothered me....why is it that a 6 foot wave can look like a 4 foot wave from a distance, a 9 foot wave up close, a 3 foot wave to a Hawaiian, or head high to most of us east coasters??? The difference between face heights, back heights, swell heights (crest to trough) has always bothered me too. A 4 foot swell can have a 10 foot face if conditions are right !!

Bottom line, waves blow my mind...

nah i think that was intentional

I heard that head high is 5ft. (not because people are five foot but because when surfing you bend your knees so you're smaller). which would mean that doh is 10ft. so i agree with swellinfo

I recall thinking this day was o/h, in the 8' range, but I guess you'd call it double o/h+

that wave to a hawiaan (or anyone else not on the gulf/east coast) is about 4 feet.

no not quite doh, i'd call it 8' too. 10-12 ft. as swellinfo said earlier would be doh.

i'd agree with solid 8'

*General remarks about the Surfline wave height scale for interpreting forecasted wave heights:

1'= knee high
2'= thigh high
3'= waist high
4'= shoulder high
5'= head high
6'= 1 foot overhead
8'= 3' overhead
10'=5’ overhead or Double Overhead faces

i'd say this is solid triple over toe (gulf coast!)

maybe 4 feet at the most.......that being the picture posted by rodndtube. sure, many will give me crap for that one, but really,...we are talking east coast. beside OBX and a few other select spots, you just can not compare what we get to other spots on the globe.

Ha Ha. 6' as one foot overhead??? Not surprised since "inflated" surf numbers drive people to their sites. It is no wonder some people use the Hawaiian scale!

I've always like this shot because it provides a good picture of tropical conditions and clean-up sets. The outside wave is about 50 yds further out than the inside wave. How big is the surf?

somewhere in the 10-15 ft (face height) range right? I can't really tell.

well the inside looks overhead but the outside is a few feet bigger, at least double overhead

How about the Hawaiian scale? don't they measure from the back of the wave?

no haha yes. weve had a couple discussions about the two wave measurement systems
