Okay so we all know surfing is like cigarettes, we need a constant fix.
What have you sacraficed in order to ride waves?
This should be interesting.

My current girlfriend.
When I first met her... I made plans to take her to AC for a night and it would of been the second time we hung out..but that day I had to tell her the waves were gonna be good on Sunday and wasn't going to go out.. October 26, 2008 if any of you remember..haha.
I figured it was all over after that and didn't even bother to contact her but she ended up texting me on Monday and says, "How was the waves? Hope they were worth ditching me over?" My response went something like, "Yeah, they were. They were really ****ing good actually." Now I've been with her for 3 months. HAH..my short story.

this past october and november ditched my gf to surf most of my weekends and she was pissed but we still went out for about a 2 months until december 1st when we decided to give up our relationship since she was busy with dance and what not and i was busy traveling and surfing over weekends when we were home together. but she would sit out on the beach and watch.

Countless hours driving to and from the Outer Banks....
Seriously though, I sacrifice not surfing in order to get an education, and that sucks!!!!

I probably sacrifice sleep more than anything. I'm always up for a dawn patrol whether it's good or not, and usually my sessions are really long (anywhere from 4-8 hrs depending on season and conditions) so I'm always tired but I just get up for dp the next morning anyway, so i'm never fully rested.
As stated above, I also sacrifice surfing in order to give myself a fighting chance to get into a good college like UCSD where average GPA is 4.09 unweighted. Takes a lot of work and time so I have to give up something, but i wish it wasnt surfing.

I've skipped out on my girl alot. Plans with her parents. Called out of/left work early/showed up late alot. Last year at the All Good Festival I left early afternoon on saturday because that was the same time as Bertha. That one cost me some money and a fun night of partying but when I got back I went right out to a good session with some good friends... definately worth it.
Anyone skip court for waves? AHAHAHA... that would be the ultimate sacrifice.

That sucks! At my school we have idt (independent decision time) if you don't have class or you could just have an idt on your schedule if you don't take two electives and we're allowed to leave the school then or during our lunch period. Sometimes if you have an idt, then lunch, then idt for science on a lab day you could get 4 periods off!! I had that once and I just went surfing for like 3.5 hrs.

I sacrificed my former life. In order to be in the water more than 2-3 times a year, I moved from where I grew up at to live in a beach town. Now, I'm in the water 2-3 times a week on average year round. It took a lot of effort to get to where I am at now, from all the losses I had to cut to get here, very hard physically and emotionally. I moved away from my family and friends in order to surf waves. So far I think I top all your stories guys!

It’s all about balance people. Balance. Sacrifice usually means you do not have your priorities straight. Wife gets mad hear and there, but I would never sacrifice waves for my wife, family or friends. That is stupid. Surfing is something that should be necessary to watermen but to sacrifice a relationship seems immature. This topic usually shows ones true colors.

friends. family. changed careers. changed locations. relocated 3000miles away.
on a daily, I sacrifice time with friends and time with my girl to surf.
im from maryland and about 8 years ago, I got the surfing bug up my ass and oc md just wouldn't cut it for me. I wanted perfect weather and I wanted to surf everyday all year without a 6 mil wetsuit.
I moved my girl from baltimore and she has missed her family everday for 8 years. I plan my surfing around her. I make sure to go early so I don't neglect her all day.
I used to go down to baja with her every week. I would surf a empty point break alone while she films me in the mornings and by lunch time we r in ensenada eating and drinking.
so as long as u incorporate ur girlfriend in what u do, u don't need to lose her.
but being away from family and friends is by far the biggest sacrifice. everyday we miss them. we don't have kids yet, but it makes u feel really selfish when your main reason for not moving back east is not weather or family. it is the surf.
so, to all those that I care about, that don't surf, they just don't get it. my parents and my girls parents are like, when u get older, surfing won't matter to u. when u have kids, YOu won't be worried about surfing.
im like, oh yes i will
