spring is a tricky time of year, because it is transition time for the weather patterns.
Having said that you can get good surf, with smaller crowds on the north shore. You also have the opportunity to get early season south shore. But all in all, it is a higher risk time of year to get epic surf. There is always something to surf tho, and north shore crowds will definitely be down.

Yeah that's why I am trying to go there in the spring. I am staying a few houses away from Pipe. All I know is there will be less crowds like you said and Jamie O'brien will be living a house or two away from me. Should be real fun and I hope the airfair goes down by then.

the jan swells are def bigger and if pipe is breaking its psycho, but most everywhere breaks stormy and it washes through from the outer reef and crumbling into the break. early season has been good and late season north shore has typically been more risky but south shore can fire, even with huge parking but you gotta hustle for a spot

Seth, sign up for travel alerts from places like expedia, travelocity, etc. I have mine set up with e-mail alerts for HI, Cali, Puerto Rico & Florida (Disney & family) & always get updates every couple of days. You can set a price where you want the tickets to be @ for the alert or just a continuous fare update.
I recvd an alert from Philly to HI round trip with 1 stop last year for $ 460.
