yeahh... i just want it so i can screw around all day, no matter what the conditions. i have real boards, its not like its going to be my first board or anything.

I suspect its a black ball beater.
I have never been to CA but apparently some beachs hoist a black ball from the lifeguard stand to close the area off to surfers. Because the boars is short, soft, and has no/removable fins it does not qualify as a surfboard. It opens up areas that would otherwise be off limits. A cool concept... not sure if its needed on the east coast though.
Maybe a left coaster will chime in and offer more info.

Not usually a big deal out here. It's normally the crowded beachbreaks that get the blackball anyway. On good days you are out there before the lifeguards and done before they post flags anyway. Not normally a huge deal to us "left coasters" ;):D
But I have my surf mats, my HI pinapple plates, alaias, and my fins & handguns for body surfing if I ever need to surf a break without a surfboard. No worries. :D
