Ive checked the mid town cam several times during the week and cant get over how many people are out in the middle of the day. Don't get me wrong, I'd be out there if I could but I have to pay the bills. I just don't get what all these people do that allow them to be mob up 48th during th week in the middle of the day? I realize not everyone has a 9-5 but it looks like a summer weekend out there!

Nationally, 1 in 10 are unemployed. Therefore (no other factors included).....1 in 10 surfers are unemployed.
In your area the percentages might be even higher since its such a seasonal place.

dude i've been wondering the same thing for years. being stuck in the office watching other people score good waves is pretty awful.

Let me second and third the sentiment, and expose my fogey-ism. I remember living in OC in the early 80's and driving around looking for someone to surf with on October days just like this one (November and December days too!). Even the main break of the day - surprise, 48th Street - could be empty.
Maybe crawling into an O'Neill O'riginal fullsuit had something to do with keeping the crowds down. Best description of these suits I ever heard came from an equivalent-aged Outer Banks surf shop owner - it was surfing while wearing a garden hose.
Anyway, more power to those who can get on it on a whim.

business owners (a lot of smaller places aren't open during the week now or closed altogether), servers/bartenders (night work), real estate agents (nuff said), kids (skipping school). today was fun. :D

So how big was it today in OC,MD? From the cam, it looked waist - chest, and it usually looks bigger when your'e out there.
One report says 4-5ft with overhead sets.

actually, it was super fun today! better around early afternoon when tide was a lil lower and the winds had just switched, but a lot cleaner and still fun in the afternoon. definitely waist-chest, whoever that dude is that posted overhead must be out of his mind!
i'll speak for myself: :( unemployed with at least 10 applications to serve tables out around town haha the only positive of that is i've been having some amazing all day sessions over the past 2 weeks! but damn is that travel fund getting eaten up fast without a job...
...so anyone trying to hire an extremely bright, interesting, and funny 24 year old with a philosophy/geography: earth and atmospheric sciences dual major? i can do anything from clean, serve tables, construction, debate, cook, food/music/film critic, manage accounts, GIS, or learn any trade with a keen and eager attitude! haha seriously though!

if you are into surfing why would not find a job or career that would allow you to maximize your water time? Other then family responsibilities, you have no real reason not to put yourself where you truly would love to be.
As far as conditions today,......if was far from perfect<<<<<<<regardless of what\ever report may have been posted. Waist to chest, very peaky, quick drops, and some hollow sections to be had if you found the right one. Pretty day, sun came out,.. offshore winds, just some good fun.
Everyone is in 3/2 full at the most, duck dive with no hood,<<<feels great. The water is still so warm. I think it safe to say we will be in 3/2's into NOV!
late afternoon/early evening on the 27th was good fun to:)
As far as the crowds you have been seeing, I do not know what to tell you other then many,.. many of them are new faces,..very young kids, college students, kooks with no business being around people when they refuse to keep control of their logs when they are out in short board waves, etc..worst part is that they think they are entitled somehow, ....what a cluster !@#$, as the drill Sergent use to say.

Everyone has crazy work hours in this town, which is why you see so many out midday. I work 2nd shift so I can surf in the morning and early afternoon. DEATH to the 9-5 grind!

the lineup always seems to get a little more packed when the bus lets all the groms off....I was out the other day and at like 345 around it got twice as crowded with the highschool crowd.......I personally work in the bar at the quality in on 54th street sat and sun night and tuesday morning lets me sufe whenever but its sooooo slow so if anyone out there wants a cheap meal or beer any of those days then come in and tell me who you are from these forums and ill def hook it up....

I teach high school and the worst is when I log on and see a crowd scoring good waves and know some of my kids are skipping to surf then they rag on me the next day about how good it was.

I'm a morning surfer, and can say that it's not that crowded early, but around 9 am the crowd fills in. But there are a lot of little peeks around town, not just 48th street. There does seem to be a bunch of new faces in the water, however, most of them show enough respect for other surfers.

Yeah, on Wednesday, I was eating my lunch at my desk and looked at the 48th street webcam and also was shocked at how many surfers were in the water around 1pm on a Wednesday in late October. It looked like pre-labor day crowds. And the forecast wasn't anything stellar either..."semi-clean/thigh high" was showing on the forecast, but the waves were bigger than that upon view (looked like consistent chest high sets to me on the 48th St. cam).

Most of the people out are prolly teens/college students, who are working part time and surf when they're not working or at class..

I dont get out in the water during the week as much as I want to anymore. I work 2nd shift but my job is 45 min away from my house which dont bother me too much cause it is not as long as some of my other commutes in the past. I try to get out in the water at least once a week and on the weekends in the colder months. Have kids , morgage and other responsibilties keep me busy .
Before I got into carrer I have choosen I use to get Laid off from Sept- march which was great for me and my hours for work were from 2pm - 12 midnght. So after work I could party then go surf in the morning during the summer months.
I cant complain I get paid very well and I have great time off and pretty much every hoilday off and after the bills are paid there is a little coin left to get my self some nice surfing gear:D

Some of us lucky ones retired early to the eastern shore (26 yrs in the USAF). So still "young" and have the rest of my life to surf in the middle of the work week. Summer weekends are too miserable.

medical supply/device or pharma sales is where it's at if you want a good paying job with the flexibility to go surfing when there's waves.

And thanks for serving the country for so many years. You've earned and deserve the opportunity to hit the water anytime you want.
