View Full Version : Tips: when changing out of wetsuit

Today when i took of my suit i noticed by feet were yellow and my hands were super numb. I know this is normal, due to water temp, but are there techniques you all would like to share with making the change not too bad.
heres a tip i learned: bring a big gallon of hot water and keep it in the car. it helps so much! (its common sense but it works!)
any tips to make the change a little bit better?
thanks

throw a towel on the seat, drive home and change out in the shower = my method...
otherwise, you gotta grin and bear it...

I agree with the guys above! I never understood the mentality of changing in/out of a wetsuit at the beach--wind, sand in the suit, cold, heat, lack of privacy, etc. Wear your suit in the car both ways, unless you're sneaking out of work/school and walking out in your wetsuit would make it kinda obvious!

if you plan on sitting in your car with your suit, get neoprene covers for the seats or you'll trash them in a season.

I get to the beach in my suit and I get home in my suit. My drive to the beach is 5-15 minutes, so I don't have any reason to change.

I have an SUV with tinted windows. So I put down all the seats and make my trunk into a changing room. It can be difficult changing out of the wetsuit while lying down in my trunk, but at least I'm warm..I have a 45 minute drive to the water so I can't really wear the suit on the drive there and back..

I change in the back of the landrover when its cold. If not I have in issue changing on the street. I wear boardies under my suit and just wrap a towel around me to slip them off and put my pants on . I just try not to make a event out it to draw attention to me

One of my trucks is a Honda Element with back seats removed and tinted windows. Nothing better than getting out of the water, starting it up with the heat full blast and changing into nice dry clothes. I have to admit I feel like taking a nap back there after a long cold session. I could drive home (only five minutes) but when I do that I usually end up scalding myself and my feet start to itch so bad that I feel like scratching my skin off. I was told that the itch is from warming your extremities too fast.

usually i keep my car on during the session...full heat blasting.. then on the walk back to my car i urinate myself then pour a bottle of hot sauce in my suit. once at the car i cut my suit open with a razor i have stashed behind the wheel well. this makes it quick to get out of the suit and into the hot ass car

Board shorts bunch up and cause chafing under a wetsuit. I've been diving for a long time and I learned early why divers wear bikinis under their wetsuits!

gold bond, vasoline, any thing to reduce friction. try dumping corn starch down the legs when thaking the suit off which may be a mess tho. they make a shower for surfing and we can support our "happy" friend liquidshredder by buying from them

I always change in the street. I let my towel slip a lot in hopes of that one day coming where one of the rich yankee mother****ers who buy up all the old house on the beach and build new ugly ****mansions look out their window, see the naked guy by himself dripping wet, freak out and move back to jersey.

Dude, save your cash. I bought a 2 gal garden/bug sprayer at Home Depot and found a shartty wetsuit at goodwill. cut a leg off the wetsuit then pulled it over the jug (to keep in a little bit of heat at least) and secured it with cable ties. The whole ran maybe $15.
Fill it with steaming hot tap water. Before I paddle out I use the wand to jet water into my boots and gloves, and down my back and front through the the neck, works well through the face of my hood to get the top of the head. The warmth usually lasts long enough until friction and body heat take over, and of course peeing helps, too. When my session is over I go straight to the wand again and wait a few minutes until my hands and feet are super warm again.
I'm lucky enough to live close to the oceanfront so I keep it all on till I get in the shower, too.

I'm with the majority, I throw a towel on the seat and one around my waist and then take it off while in the shower to rinse it out. As far the Vaseline goes, I use to put a layer of it on my face because it works well as a insulation layer from the cold water and completely block the feeling of the wind. I would not recommend using anywhere else to get your wet suite on because neoprene and Vaseline don't mix well. Vaseline (and other things like it) are petrolatum based and it will degrade and damage the neoprene in your suite. I use to wear board shorts under my suite, besides being uncomfortable if you think about it does it really serve any practical function? With how good the wet suites are nowadays, Free balln' is the way to go IMO because it feels like your surfing naked. Board shorts under the suite to me would like being taking a shower with your clothes on; But hey what ever floats your boat!

:D I agree that UnderArmour is the best solution for preventing rashes in wetsuit or board shorts.
I get changed outside; This my normal procedure... start car and put on heat, remove hoodie, add warm winter hat, remove upper part of wetsuit, add shirt and warm jacket, remove booties and rest of wetsuit (I have on UnderArmour so no need for a towel just yet), then wrap towel, remove UnderArmour, put on my warm slippers (YES Slippers with rubber soles), put on my boxer briefs, put on pants, get my butt in car. If it's warm enough (above 35 degrees) I just change like its summertime.

I carry a 2 gallon solar shower full of hot water. when you get out of the water stick the hose down the suit and fill it will the warm water. It'll warm you and the suit up at the same time and make it way easier to get off. I also use polypro socks to make getting the suit off easier. Put a hoodie type blamket over your head to protect from cold wind while standing in a a rubbermaid storage bucket and take the suit off right into the bucket. You'll also be standing in warm water in the bucket. the other way is to just hold your chest out and take all that winter has to offer for those few minutes of exposure. sometimes if there is a bathroom or something nearby like at Assateague I'll bring a propane heater to warm up the room or even outside the car, though outside waists alot of fuel quickly. the final alternative is using a changing tent outside your car. You can even hook up the solar shower.
Sitting in the car with a wettie really does ruin the car even with seat protectors but sometimes you have to during a break.

ditto. almost word for word (no slippers hah). but yeah i usually do just that, but when its super cold and windy, i take off the top half, go sweatshirt and drive to my shorehouse, which is less than 10 minutes away from my breaks, and go shower.

Ive had a problem of a major suction on my junk once wet and in the water. It's horrible! I try to adjust and it just feels like it's getting tighter and tighter. I pull the suit to try to get em loose and it just feels like I'm stretching my sack! Ugh sorry but it is so painful it's practically unbearable...
I think I'm gonna have to start wearing a man supporter or like a 'surf strap' or a cup or something. It's to the point to where it almost kills the session. :o:mad:
(come on, lemme hear another 'pee pee dragger' joke)

I agree, boardies dont work that great under a suit. I guess if your walking or biking a distance in boardies and you have to put the suit on on the beach then its fitting to wear them under the suit. I wear Techwick or Underarmor. I also found some stuff called Body Glide. that works wonders under any kind of suit including boardies. all athletics. It also has an spf rating 23. It rubs on wherever you need it. lasts for hours. Dont put it on your face though. Nice find.

Another good tip is to have a smokin hot super model pull your wet suit off in the shower. When your done she can get you a beer. Ha Ha Then you wake up and your wifes telling you to put the trash out.
