I break at least 1 board per year. Lately it's been more. But, I do sell boards after I beat them up a bit...unless I am in love with the board. And, the one's I love are usually the one's that breaks.

Ive only had 1 "magic board" that lasted any length of time, not sure why it did, but it lasted me many years, where usually a "magic board" will last me less than a year.
I have a

5'10 BAT hybrid fish- good for anything up to 1' overhead too "skatey" after
6.0 BAT sunfish (basically a rocketfish shape with a few performance tweeks)- good for anything we get in FL

I've got a few boards, but mainly use two of them:

5'11" WRV quad fin J. Fernandez
6'0" Chemistry high performance tri-fin

The other boards are either old, broken, or just played out... I do have this one board that some girl won at a bar and gave to me. It's a donkey but I would like to do something with it. Thinking of getting some art put on it and hanging it in my living room... It's a Glenn Klugel (Kugel); anyone ever heard of this shaper?

What im riding now...

5'10 custom addict surfboard, thumb tail
5'11 plus one squash
5'11 plus one rounded pin
6'0 plus one squash
6'0 plus one swallow
6'2 plus one squash
6'5 addict surfboard, rounded pin tail
7'2 plus one mini-gun, pintail
8'8 southcoast surfshop longboard thing.

I've built that collection up over the past 4 years, and this quiver gets me through ANY conditions that come through San Diego. from, ankle high to TOH. As long as they all hold up, i won't need any boards for a while.

Still own, but don't ride.
a 6'0 Fish from NY i think. Its a company called "NA" (Anyone know about this company)? Its a thruster, super thick. Fun as hell on the summer reefs, but its super slow now and I dont ride it.

a 6'3 Peter Benjamin Channel bottom. Old late 80s board. Fun and thick. Never ride it.

5'10" HSD quad fish (found this used in a shop all banged up...fixed it up & it turned out to be a really good board)

5'10" rusty dwart (despite all the options, i like this best as a twin w/ trailer set up. goes really fast in fat, kinda mushy surf)

5'10" wynn stubby bonzer (pretty much has been my go-to board for the past 2 years)

6'0" wynn bonzer mini egg (coming soon)
6'2"wynn bonzer hp shortboard (coming soon)

6'4"wynn single fin egg (very fun high-volume board...great for the winter b/c it still floats well w/ all the rubber on)

6'4" bing bonzer 3 (my first bonzer...mostly a wall hanger now)

6'6" wynn bonzer step-up pintail (a modified black beauty template that i really love...just wish i had a reason to use it more often. its been ridden more in foreign countries than it has here at home)

Gonna get anther 9'6 its either gonna be a Wynn or a Bing I haven't made up my mind yet:confused:

If your thinking about a Bing, I bought a 9'6" Bing Trimulux model about a year and a half ago from Heritage. It's kind of like your do-it-all traditional single fin. Needless to say the glide is unreal. I didn't know till I checked the Bing website that they pictured my board for the description of the model which Heritage confirmed to me. I was just in there this past month and they hay a 9'4" Trimulux with clear coke bottle blue resin tint, it just needs a $150 for a layaway and a good home. http://www.bingsurf.com/surfboards_trimulux
Otherwise I'll be a eight boards, about ready to finally order a 6'2" Rich Pavel Speedialer

6'2" Greenroom Whiskey Fish. Thick and wide, swallow tail. Local shape, my go to shortboard for almost any day, fat and wide to get going on mushy little waves. Amazing board. A bit too long though.

6'5" Hickman squash tail. I ride this board when the waves start tipping head high, when I need something with a bit more length. Real old so I don't feel bad about banging it around or anything. This is the board my dad taught me to surf on. It used to be his.

7'2" Walden Mini Magic model. A longboard shape/style board minus about three feet. I got this several years ago and my surfing improved exponentially because it enabled me to catch waves on my own. I still ride it occasionally. Easy to walk on.

7'6" Takayama Egg. A fun mid-range board. Kind of a weird shape, and egg with a nice pintail. Tracks well when the waves are bigger, catches and turns easy when it's small. Fun with sidebites or as a singlefin.

9'6" Alison high-performance longboard. This is the board that I was introduced to longboarding on. Not great for walking, but a very forgiving transition and a wave catching machine. I've had more fun sessions on this board than any other listed here.

9'8" Hobie. Shaped in the early 60's. Picked it up relatively cheap and fixed it up. Big, wide, thick, heavy, truly a classic log. Big D-fin made of redwood. Ten times harder to ride than any other board, but ten times more rewarding as well. This is my favorite board of all.

So I have a quiver of 6.

Yeah I know a guy whos has a IsIS he want to sell me and I was looking at possibly a new Elevator. I want something glassed heavy cause I prefer a board with some weight to it. I like both of those boards but my vote goes to the Zeph Is Is. It sort of reminds me of the Channin Square. Check out the video. I believe thats Kevin Shaughnessy riding the Square. Its an awesome small wave board (perfect for our midsummer conditions) good to chest high.

I like 8oz. volan glass with a deck & tail patch. My rails have extra glass also. Its a little on the heavy side but I like the weight. I had a 9'6" Modern for a while (I'm pretty sure it was a pop out) that I bought used. The glass was very light and so was the board. It dinged if you looked at it not to mention the pressure dents in the deck. It didn't paddle well and was only fair in catching waves on small days.

2 really nice boards. Good Luck with them. I would much rather buy a clean used board rather than pay the price for one thats never seen the water. If I bring another board home I may get divorced. To me - I'd rather look at a quality hand shaped board rather than a painting. They are kind like works of art. I wish my wife would see it that way.

I took out the Elevator today and was really happy with it after I got my body placement on it right. When you go to Paddle yo have to lay back a little bit more that you standard Log cause they isnt that much volume up by the nose . Most of the volume is in the chest/ Body area. With a 11inch pivot fin it turns really smooth and isnt really squirly. Noserideing on this is like nothing I have ever experienced. It noserides really easy and the Tail rocker keeps it locked when on the nose . Also when your on the nose the board speeds up to the point where it caught me off guard and when it locked in and your on the nose if your in the right spot you can get some really long nose rides off this this boards

If you intersted in one I would definaly get one

he used to shape for my buddy at Hatteras Glass (Rodanthe Surf Shop) and had shaped all over the country. when he moved to Avon he got with one of the local gals and contracted HIV/AIDS.

is that pivot fin the Calvani fin by any chance? that's the fin that they told me my board would come with. how is that thing glassed?

i'm glad you enjoyed your new board

Yeah Margaret is right on the money . It took me a cpl waves to get my body postioning dialed in . You gotta have you chest over the thickest part of the board , so you a bit farther back on the board. I belive it is the Calvani fins it a 11inch pivot fin that comes with all Elevator. Its glassed pretty heavy with Volan total of 16oz I was told buy the guy who I got it from which I think is who they glass all of Bings boards expet the Pig and the Lightweight.

Are you ordering from Bing or Heritage Surf??? I talk to a Margaret a few times and She is really cool. She told me to call up Heritage Surf and talk to Jamie and he was very helpful with any questions I had. That who I got my Elevator and NR2 off of .He's a really cool guy

But like I said be ready the first time you get on the nose on that thing . Soon as you get up there the board picks up crazy speed , its insane how fast it goes

Jamie is the man. He is the one to talk to when ordering a longboard for sure. He also does excellent repairs.

Would it do well in east coast waves?

IMO Theres no such thing as "east coast waves"

Rhode Island point breaks in 40 degree water 6mm rubber
Hollow Poverty Beach
IRI with suckout pits on one side and fishy/longboard waves on the other
Mushy Assateague
Perfect OBX with 75 degree water
Florida summer with endless waist high wind swell and 80 water.

all east coast waves but my guess is you'll find it hard to pick a board that does well in some, without being the wrong board in the rest.

A 5'7 Diamond tail quad that I shaped myself with the help of Dave Yearwood and got it glassed at Wrightsville Glassing. Just got done yesterday, I'm still anticipating my first ride with this baby. I made it for summer mush but with any luck it may actaully perform on some better waves too.

A 5'11 Jimmy Keith Whiskey Fish thruster that I ride for basically anything... it's extremely versatile actually. I ride itin anything from waist high to as big wrightsville will get. This board has been through a lot with me since May of last year. It's not too old yet, and is still in great condition, I just hope it stays that way - this board has taught me a lot.

An 8 foot longboard-ish thing. three fin. I basically learned to surf on this board after trading in a crapy pop-out board for this. I credit it for teaching me how to use the rail of the board and how to turn off my back foot. It's still really fun to ride on small days, and you can actually do some nose rides if you get it dialed. So even after it taught me how to surf and I've moved on to shorter boards, it just keeps coming back and teaching me more things. This board is is a dream to ride when it's knee to waist and glassy, it just glides so well.

9'6" wynn si si slider (heavy classic style log)

i've hacked away quite a bit at my quiver quite a bit lately...the 6'4" single fin, the 5'10" dwart, & the 5'10" hsd quad fish have all been sold off.
my quiver consists almost entirely of bonzers now, except for my log. this is about as minimal as i'm interested in going just now. maybe one day i'll continue to simplify, but i doubt it.
there's something about the minimalist quiver that appeals to me...a log, a small wave board, & a good wave board...theoretically, that's all you really need on the east coast.
but it's really fun to experiment w/ other shapes & designs!! :D

on that note, beachbreak: how do you like the 6 channel single fin? i've been kicking around something similar & having scott build it, since i haven't gotten a board from him in a while.

what technically is a bonzer... new to surfing what is the main difference between that and a short board and what is the pro and cons when should you use a bonzer compared to days you would use standard short board. I know its all preference but like just to get an idea.

http://bonzer5.com/

bonzers can be anything you want them to be...hpsb, egg, longboard, fishy-type, mid-length, etc..."bonzer" is the fin set up combined w/ the bottom contours. personally, i love them! pretty much every board currently in my quiver is based around the bonzer concept. brian wynn is a great bonzer shaper, learned directly from the inventors, malcolm & duncan campbell, while he was in california. i find them to be faster, better barrel boards, & just overall more suited to my style of surfing. in steep, fast breaking waves, i find that i'm able to project around sections better on a bonzer than on a thruster. bonzers also can get higher & tighter in the pocket w/out sliding than a thruster. i have a few thrusters, but they all feature the deep bonzer-like bottom contour. the only board that's not really bonzer centric is my log.

ps-props to the guy who bumped this thread back to the land of the living! i enjoy a good quiver discussion/oogle-fest! i'm waiting on a couple boards, then i'll post up a complete quiver shot...likely sometime in the spring!

6.8 dusty rhodes love - monster tail thickness, old nj board, huge skeg and easy to carve or cheat up to the nose
6.6 cambell bros egg - great all around board, fun in summer if you dont want to longboard
6.3 webber afterburner - step up for fall
