Chunk Out o' Board

Hey i searched the threads and didnt really find what i was looking for so i have a question for the repair guys.

My board has a huge gash from where my leashed ripped through it right along the stringer at the tail. It's like a 3" deep chunk that's missing. The stringer was not affected, it just seemed like the foam detached from the stringer when it was ripped off. Can i take a piece of wood, or other substitute, and carve it to the dimensions needed, stick it in where the chunk is now missing, and re-fiberglass over it?

if you just ripped up the foam, why not just replace it with more foam? If the stringer wasn't effected then i see no reason to add more wood...

just curious was it actually your leash that dug in? or was it the little rope that goes in the cup?

it was the rope :/ i lost my leash in Earl when i was 200 yards out in 6 ft. surf and decided that i never want that to happen again so i put some heavy ass duty rope in place. and it worked great till this.

Okay so there are two ways to fix this repair.

1. Q-cell: Make sure the foam is COMPLETELY DRY, mix a batch of q-cell and get it thick almost the consistency of toothpaste. Tape a piece of wax paper on the bottom to hold the resin in and barrier the rail as well. Pour the mix in and let cure. Sand the q-cell to match the rest of the board, then laminate 2x 4oz cloth over the repair, hotcoat, sand, and done.

2. Replace w/ foam: this method is the best when you are trying not to add any additional weight. Cut out a square section around the repair, glue in foam with resin, then shape the foam down to match the board, laminate, hotcoat, then sand. Depending on the size of the repair i prefer to use this method when fixing boards.

Can i get the foam at a hardware store? or do i have to go to a surf shop/shaper/ezfoam for it?

Most shapers have chucks lying around, i know i have tons. If you can't find it then just go with the q-cell method and add more q-cell then resin to keep weight down.
