"Everybody in the 50's was lost in the boom of U.S. prosperity and didn't see the writing on the wall. That their actions would some day have consequences. He saw the way the U.S. was going the way of the Romans before that idea became a fad. Yeah he could be a scumbag, but he was extremely intelligent and a classic character. Ask crazy Aussie surf journo, Derek Hynde about how far Dora's influence extended. Oh LBCrew nice Greenough reference in the style thread."
"It's such a ME,ME,ME ME society these days.....Oh, you don't like something somebody says.....well lets get at them and throw them out of YOUR world. The more recent generations have been coddled with a "Johnny can do no wrong" attitude, which creates a generation of kids with TOO much self-esteem and attitiude and ego. But even with that upbringing, still no interseting characters. They lost their personalities in computers, video games and cell phones. How many times do you see kids actually playing pick-up games of football, street hockey, baseball etc.......I haven't seen that in years. They can't even communicate in person.....only behind a computer screen or on a phone."
I edited your post a bit in order to respond to a couple of things. First, not only does our country appear to be declining like the Roman Empire, worst, we appear to be going the way of Easter Island, and no one in charge has the stones to effect real change. Why does it seem that the best leaders this country had have been dead for 200 years? Why aren't the people in this country smart enough to get behind leaders who might actually right the ship and get them elected? I think part two of your quote that I selected sheds light on that subject.
When we old geezers were kids, if you finished in 9th place you didn't get a trophy and that pissed me off and made me work harder so that I could win. That BS brought the entitlement generation (not all of them) and crippled many people to the point where they don't even contribute to society at all. There was a time when people were proud of being the best plumber, mechanic, home builder, etc. which is great. Not everyone can be a star, and most of us have to suck it up and be the best we can be and actually earn it.
Couple that with the pervasive intrusion of computers, smart phones, video games and now you have kids who don't even read, don't play sports, and essentially don't engage in "actual reality" because "virtual reality" makes it easier to deny their own shortcomings. Failing, getting pissed off about it, and doing something to fix it is what makes a person great. I fear that many people do not face failure with resolve because they have become soft, and thus I fear for our future more than ever. Glad I speak another language so at least I have options.
SJB, you are a character, but you seem to have your **** together. I appreciate you getting me fired up.
P.S. Ihatelongboarders, your screen name alone says a lot about your character.
P.P.S. Xgen70 it's "you're" as in "you are" not your
Acceptable as Slang...Your. like quick use on the internet/ forums. Your WRONG=mY bAD
"You're" as in You Are Welcome.
Always a pleasure to hear from you. Thanks for your insight.
KK... great post.
Every modern civilization has met the same fate... growing beyond it's means... it's population expanding beyond the ability of the environment to sustain it. Why do we think we're any different? History says the next step is the revolt of the working class over the ruling class. Pop some popcorn...
SJB... kids still call pickup games on my street, and you're kids can come. And yes, KK... some kids lose, some kids win, but they all come over to my house to slug down Stop'nShop ginger ale in the garage... a 12 pack at a time!
BTW... none of them surf.
SJB I don't know what to say. I'm not impressed but I do like the honesty. I won't fawn over you like some here have, but I will agree that Dora had it right. You appear to be a somewhat insightful person, or maybe your mom wrote this for you. Either way I believe that it is too late to turn the clock back, so why lament about what some heroin addicted con man did or envisioned. I rather spend my energies saving what I can.
Occupy and the Tea Party are evidence of that. People are getting fed up. Glad the youngsters are still participating in actual reality in your neck of the woods. I remember Stop and Shop from my days growing up in Narragansett Beach. I miss the northeast sometimes.
