This is such a joke. I know that lifeguards have their limits when sharks and other "life threatening" instances come into play; however, this situation is pretty clean cut. I get the whole zone thing and I understand where the "big wigs" are coming from: he left his post and the people that were swimming in his zone were now at risk in his absence. At the same time, he made his mind and acted in the best interest of saving another's life. I think that this lifeguard will be back on the stand next week.
Agreed, at the very least they should be thankful that he did what any human with a heart should have done in that situation. If he had said "NO, it's not in my zone, sorry", then think about how differently this story would read. They should allow the guy back on the job, and they should give him a pat on the back for doing the "right thing", what a thankless job that must be
Screw getting the job back....he should use this story to help him find a job working for people who are not lawyer driven inhumane heartless bastards.
Looks like our buddy was offered his job back. Doesn't look too good for the lifeguards that quit in protest.

Question for the a-hole that fired the life gaurd: If that was your wife, mother or child, would you still prefer the gaurd stay in his zone while they drown?
as a former guard of 10 years, i can honestly say that while you have a legal "out" in such circumstances, you still have a moral or ethical obligation. personally, i don't think i'd be able to live w/ myself if i didn't go b/c sharks or whatever...the very nature of the job entails putting your life at risk for another. the captain of the first patrol i worked for put it best: you have to go, you just don't have to come back.
i applaud the guy for what he did; screw the rules, screw the bs, save the life & deal w/ the fallout later.
