I broke my wrist back in February...they do removable braces for the most part now a days. The reason you need to go to the DR. is if it is broken, you need to know if it is set right. If it's more than 10 degrees off, you will more than likely need it reset. Also if it's broken and not needing resetting, you might need to hold off on using it, so as to not cause more serious problems. You can go to a walk in clinic to get the info you need...knowing is half the battle.
My wrist was less than 10 degrees and got the brace off after 5 weeks, but I can still feel my tendon and muscles having to readjust to the change.
