St thomas??

St thomas??

I am going to St Thomas for the first week of March. Has anyone ever been there? Are there any good breaks? is there usually swell there around that time and should i even bring my board? I would love to surf there, it'll be my first time surfing anywhere besides NJ, OBX and florida.

There are spots to surf, Hull Bay is the easiest to get to. I went to St. John last March and there was surf on Cinnamon Bay. I have heard that the locals can be a problem in St Thomas and I didn't try to surf there. From what I saw while riding the shuttle I don't think I would be comfortable, but if you feel up to it go for it. March is a good time to surf on the islands if there is a big storm. Tortolla is way better from what I hear (much more consitant) so if you get the chance you might want to head there, I think the locals are easier to deal with too. Personally I wasn't that comfortable being alone at those spots so I took the meager offerings on St John and enjoyed them for what they were worth. When I was flying into the airport on St. Thomas I could see an unbelievable spot going off with some huge lefts and not a person to be seen. You would need a boat to get to it though. Hope this helps.

flew to st thomas and ferried way over to virgin gorda last year...not sure about st thomas but tortolla has some great spots and its only a short ferry trip from st thomas

A buddy of mine went to tortola a while back. He's not a big surfer,but he showed me pictures of the beach where he was. It was a perfect stomach high wave with nobody in sight. Not in the water or on the beach. It looked like paradise. Stomach high may not sound like much, but the shape of these waves were gorgeous clean, long lines in crystal clear 80 degree water with nobody around.
