I agree, try a quad or twinzer. I have a Kane Garden Twinzer Fish that works great. I also have a couple of quad fish that I love.
You only need a 4/3mm. 5mm booties will work but I don't even use those much of the time. I have never used gloves and the vast majority of surfers around here don't use them either.
