OK thanks for the info. We probably aren't going to LBI at this point, but are there other beaches open?

Your best option would probably be the Sony HDR CX190, which is $225 on amazon. It's the best camera for that price range and seems like a decent camera for a beginner.
What kind of price range are you talking?
