You could go to La Ocho surf shop. There is a fun wave there most days and it doesn't have a heavy localized crowd. There are alot of great waves within about 45 min drive East or West of San Juan...

If you are staying up in the Male atoll those 2 boards should be fine, pushing it but fine. If you are heading to the southern atolls that pick up more swell you will need bigger boards.

Don't stay in Tamarindo. Tourist trap. Try Grande or Negra(hotel playa negra or the wave house). Beautiful spots and if you feel the need to do the tourist trap thing you can always drive in and out...

Save some money and leave New Jersey. California has better waves and San Diego has Mission/Pacific Beach which has been deemed "Lil Jersey" so you will fit in fine but have a better lifestyle.
