i also grew up working in bike shops. That first link is to a jumping bike... i dont think thats what your looking for. For a grand you have a few options:

NEW: You can either get yourself pretty decent hardtail or an entry level full suspension for a thousand bucks. If you want something fairly light, stay away from entry level Full suspension. If you are capable to assembling and adjusting the bike yourself (or willing to pay a shop $50-100), you can take advantage of some very lucrative internet deals and save a few hundred bucks, but dont be fooled, anything you order is showing up in 41 pieces.

USED: the world is your oyster. I know a lot about bikes so im comfortable buying a used one. Some CRAZY deals to be found on bike that are about 3-5 years old. A grand might get you a $2500 bike if you know what to look for. PM me if you want some suggestions.

    hope this helps

I just recently purchased a Cannondale SL2. It was just under a grand. I went from a Mongoose Hilltopper w/ Mag 21s to this...the difference is incredible. Also, seriously consider a 29er. The 29 inch wheels roll over almost anything in its path. Where do you plan on riding? I've ridden Hartshorne and Allaire so far and the bike has handled both well.

If you don't care about brand name, check out bikesdirect.com.
They seem to buy out expired trademarks (Motobecane etc.) and source straight from the factories in Asia with the best components. Looks like you pay about half what you would pay for comparably equipped bikes in a shop. I haven't bought from there but there seem to be alot of good reviews of them on the internets. They have a really nice looking Breezer here:
