True, the murder rate last year and already in this month of January is off the charts, however, 98% of the murders are taking place in the housing projects of San Juan and Ponce. There IS a drug war going on but this isn't like Mexico where the entire population is affected. If you come to surf Rincon, Aguada, Aguadilla, and Isabela (and stay out of the pj's) you will not run into any problems. Like anywhere, if you have respect and a smile you will get waves and have a great time and in Puerto Rico, probably even meet a few new friends along the way. Fly into BQN (Aguadilla, a little more money but beyond worth it, 3 min. from Wilderness!) and stay in a local rental (www.vrbo.com) or one of the many small hotels and you can even rent boards at any surf shop. 2-3 more months of prime surf season! No Passport, No Wetsuits!!!
The forecast is right on but you have to realize that Isabela (Jobos, Middles, etc.) more accurately falls under the Arecibo forecast and Isabela is usually even a little bigger than Arecibo. Aguadilla forecast covers Wilderness and Surfer's but Wildo tends to be bigger than what the forecast says for the whole area. I find Swellinfo is more accurate than Surfline for sure.
thanks for the response! I'm on the verge of getting a flight for march but i keep seeing the forecast is knee high. Do you get good swells in march april? I might fly out to cali even though its cold it's consistant.
I'm looking to jumpship in March also, flights are low enough........any idea how much one of those vacation rentals might go for? Gonna do a 4 day mid week trip.........Just wanna be on the beach, with my board, and maybe do some venturing around.......Any insight would be awesome!
March is pretty busy and most of the places are starting to get filled up. $75/night will get you a nice studio apt in Puntas at www.oceanviewpr.com An apartment on Pools beach goes for $150/night at www.rinconpoolsbeach.com check out www.rincon.org for lots of listings. Have fun!
There will be waves. We haven't had groundswell in almost 3 weeks but it has been at least chest high everyday. To me, unless its December or January, Rincon is a gamble due to its inconsistency and you'll end up driving to Isabela to surf anyways. www.vrbo.com is a good site as well as the other links. I have a friend who has a beachfront 3 bdrm 2 ba condo steps from a pool and the beach at Isabela Beach Court, a gated complex walking distance from surf and bars and restaurants (you can walk to Middles). Her name is Wanda 787-458-6345. Also a new small hotel called Sol Y Arena Hotel, above Burger's Joint, in Jobos just opened too (where the old Machete Rojo/Buenas Olas Hotel used to be). Very affordable, clean, bilingual, and surfer friendly. 787-872-1818. I used to come here on vacation a lot before I moved here and I was never disappointed. See you all in the H2O.
I love the mentality of, "I'm a local, don't surf here, go home, but I'm going to come surf your spot". Don't surf my beach! I'm coming to surf your beach!
