I find it strange that I surf standing regular ... yet I skate, wakeboard, indo board etc goofy. Does anyone else have different stances between surfing and skating? I've always considered tryin to surf goofy and see what happens but never wanna waste waves when its good.
I think it all relates to which is your dominant foot and which sport you pick up first. I'm right footed and picked up skating first and learned to skate with my dominant foot pumping from the back and skating regular. This translated to riding all board sports regular stance. If someone were to pick up surfing or snowboarding first (where the pumping foot is not necessary) without ever trying skating, they may feel more comfortable riding goofy even if they have a dominant right foot. But then when they go to skate they may be all turned around even though goofy foot may seem more natural cause they will have to either pump with their non-dominant right foot, or pump with the right foot in the front. Either way this may make skating awkward. But there probably is no rhyme or reason, whatever feels right works for most people.

I've always figured it's a combo of which foot is dominate and the fact the waters moving. That additional element - since the pavement/ski slope/lake isn't moving....you're moving down or across it, justify's it to me.
Right handed / footed puts the dominate foot on the tail = regular surf and controlling foot on the nose = goofy skate/snow/wake/falling/walking/etc..
The wave itself adds that extra dimension.....plus i'm too old to be re-edumacted!!
