I was eating breakfast this morning after a surf, reading the paper and I stumbled up on the article you speak of... Every hour, 7 TONS of extremely radioactive water is being dumped directly in the pacific. This has been happening for weeks, and Tokyo Electric says that they see no end in site for the dumping for at least 2 more months... I didn't do any exact math, but that is a SH** load of radioactive material... and this waste is EXTREMELY toxic... They said workers needed immediate surgery and treament when they accidentally stepped in a puddle of the water with industrial work boots.Originally Posted by billyharry

So, as someone living on the west coast in CA, knowing that the japanese current that flows directly at northern Baja and CA is going to be pulling this material towards us is not a comforting thought... COuple that with the Jet stream that is already sucking the radiocative steam right at us... It just flat out sucks...
I mean, the reactor has been shut off since the day of the earthquake... And a month later, A MONTH LATER, the rods are still moving. Still hot as sh**. I mean, I hate to sound like an idiot here, but who designed these things? First Graders? I mean, the backup plan to prevent a nuclear meltdown is non-exsistent? Talk about irresponsible regulations and oversight...
I hope that this incident will tigger a ripple effect and begin shutting down all of these nuclear facilities... It is clear that humans cannot harness the sheer power from splitting atoms and nuclear fission... We jump into technology that we do not fully understand... You create a system that heat up tons of metal wrapped around extremely dangerous, nuclear material, AND YOU HAVE NO WAY OF SHUTTING IT OFF AND COOLING IT DOWN???? Unacceptable... Our japanese/pacific fish supply is at risk. Fisherman's livelyhoods will be lost. Not to mention the people. The drinking water. Everything... Is so sad...
Their answer is, well we shut it off! NO YOU DIDNT! You turned the "power" switch off, but yet the rod in the reactor continue to run because they are "hot".... that makes no sense... If it takes a nuclear power source 3 months to "cool off", it should have never been put into operation.... NEVER.... If you can't shut a fu**ing fission reactor off in a few days, you have ZERO busines operating one. ZERO...
Especially along a coastline that is completely wiped out every couple hundred years, not to mention all the smaller tsunamis and earthquakes in between. LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF THE COASTLINE WHERE THE THING IS INSTALLED!!! It has been completely leveled like 6 times! I mean seriously, you call yourself engineers....
It boggles my mind, that a japanese nuclear reactor, right in front of a fault line that frequently sends tsunamis blasting at the shore was ever EVEN BUILT!!!!
I mean, their reasoning was "Well, our secondary power source was leveled... The secondary power source (WHICH IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE DAMN REACTOR) Failed... OF COURSE IT FAILED!!! IF your nuclear reactor was broken by a tsunami, WHY WOULD THE POWER SOURCE RIGHT NEXT TO IT NOT BE DESTROYED>>>>>

I appologize for my rant... I am a conservative who has never had ANY issues with the idea of nuclear power... I now believe that they should ALL be shut down.. every single one of them,....
I dont care about my laptop, or my TVs... I would rather live in a house using candle light, going to town in a horse and buggy rather than raise my children on a nuclear waste dump with contaminated air, contaminated water, contaminated fish... Its nonsense.

I am watching the scene in Japan with particular interest as I have several friends (1 a young woman with an infant son) over there- it is truly a huge disaster, slowly unfolding and the Japanese government is not being honest with the world.
When talking about energy sources, all are damaging the environment to some extent, remember the Exxon Valdez- the gulf oil spill, air pollution & acid rain from coal burning (as well as the mining enviro impact). WRT nuclear PP, you haven't even addressed the radioactive waste, that is a significant part of the problem in Japan is, more so than the core. That is some nasty ****- and stays that way a long time
I am impressed with the workers who are going into that plant to try to get things under control, they are on a suicide mission.
The nuclear disaster in Japan is horrific, and still not solved/contained ....... But also realize that shutting down all nukes in a world where they supply a significant amount of power (probably around 25 - 30 %) is not going to happen unless a REALISTIC substitute is found, whether that is wind, sun. geothermal etc. As the worlds population increases, so does the energy requirements. Just for fun google nuclear power plants in the US and find how many there are and how close they are to you. There is at least 1 within 50 miles of NYC. Where do you think they are putting all that waste?
Look at the Middle East do you think we f==ck with anything/anybody over there if not for the HUGE amounts of oil? That is the other piece of the US energy puzzle
Also realize that all the US Navy aircraft carriers (12) and fast attack as well as ballistic subs all are nuclear powered. So even if the citizens give them up- don't think the military will.

Humans and big business are just death to the envirorment, and mother nature is getting ready to take a big dump on our head. You can go as green as you want, and then something like the gulf spill, or the nuclear situation in Japan happens to trump anything we do. So I'll drive my gas guzzler and listen to the propaganda from the energy companies about "clean coal." Hell, that's my God given right as an American.
I will say one positve thing I noticed abou this situation. Remember Katrina? Remeber how the people started behaving like animals? There has been no looting, or violence in Japan. Maybe the rest of the world could learn something from them.
Isn't there a nuke plant right where Old Man's is in San Onofre?
A group proposed installing a series of ocean wave electricity generators offshore for research on how efficient they would be, the location was ideal since the nuke plant was there, it may be easy since the wave generators can just tie to the transmission grid that the existing plant was hooked up to. I don't think the research will go through, too many roadblocks as far as environmental/aesthetics/surfing & recreation communities.
If I surfed Old Man's regularly I'd be kicking, screaming, doing all sorts of protests too. But when you think about it, maybe sometimes you gotta give up these kinds of things for the welfare of the future.

Just got back from a trip to Alaska and there's a lot of talk up there about tidal energy. Don't know much about it, but it sounds a whole lot safer/cleaner/more predictable than nuclear...

Yes... Fortunately for California, the fault lines are UNDER us... on solid ground. So our earth shakes, but the fault lines are not offshore, aimed right at us. So when we have quakes, they shake the earth, which isnt bad, but it isnt going to shut down nuclear reactors and trigger tsunamis....
Like ive said in other threads, there has never been "the great california tsunami".... Japan has THOUSANDS of years of history with being eradicated by tsunamis, over and over again... It boggles my mind that you put a unstable nuclear reactor on the beach, with its only safety system built right next to it.... Its just fu**ing stupid....
WIth that said, I would hope that we start building the offshore wind energy systems.... There is onshore wind at some point of the day in CA 350 days of the year... HARNESS THE BEAST! Shut down all of these ridiculous reactors.... We don't need them!
There is one generator up in cenrtal CA, inland that has been put on a list after the japan situation, and they are going to re-structor the disaster plans... I guess one reactor up north has the same backup plan as Japan, and as we have all seen, that just simple isnt good enough....
But seriously, who wants one of these things ANYWHERE near their kids? 3 mile island is still having readings all over the place, 25 years later... RIght in our neck of the woods...
We need to shut this sh** down... If every american turned their lights off in every room they are NOT CURRENTLY IN, we could eliminate the need for them in our own country...
Now that we have a realistic threat, americans can respond. By nature, we are selfish, gas guzzling, electricty burning people... But I think we can all come together and actually agree on something...
This isnt an argument about global warming that not everyone agrees with. This is how the world gets a lot of its power, and it is unsafe... We are all at risk... We can all react together accordingly.
hey zach to answer who designed these reactors it was GE known as general electric. and then theyre made here in wilmington, nc. then they get inspected by MY dad yes you heard it right the reactors are inspected and manufactured under my dads supervision and then theyre packaged with the little nuclear tablets in wilmington as well. if you want a reliable source go to this link http://www.nei.org/ my dad uses them as they are the most reliable other than the fact my dad is getting information sent back to him since he is in charge of the reactors that they made.
