Just sold a couple boards in order to buy a new one. Really interested in the dumpster diver/neckbeard type of board. Anyone have any feedback on either one of those? Or a similar board that i dont have to shell out so much loot for the Merrick name. Thanks

got a used dumpster diver last summer and its my go to board most days. good for the small stuff and can handle the bigger stuff too unless its steep and pitching, then i will grab my standard shortboard with some more rocker. theres a ton of shapers making this same kind of board right now, so you can definitely find something without the merrick price.
I just got a Wynn Dumpster Diver copy and got a chance to take it out during this last swell for the first time. It went awesome for me, paddled well and caught waves easily but was so quick and snappy due to the short size. I can't wait to try it in some different conditions.
Only difference with mine is that instead of the single concave of the Merrick, it has a single to double with a little V in the tail. Also it was about half the price of the Merrick, a lot of shapers are making them so I'm sure yu can find a local one for a good price.
yeah tons of hybrid stubby shortboards out there. Like ROb G's board i dont favor the striaght single of a Dumpster Diver. I have a board similar to it, and it makes it better in the pocket and going top to botom in the pocket in steeper faced waves and drives and works off your back foot but honsetly i dont think it works as well in flatter faced surf as other bottom contours like RobGs board has on his. Get a DUmpster outline but go with a single to double with Vee, or straight single running into a pronounced Vee off the tail, get tons of lift and down the line speed wit the single, and the vee will help you get it on rail in flatter faced surf, also the Dumpster divers have a bit of kick in the tail rocker that doesnt work as well in flatter faced surf so maybe reduce the tail rocker a bit. I order boards from Tommy MOore he has a Tweaker model that is similar to a Dumpster diver and also a S.i.D. (step it down) Viscous model which is a single in to pronounced Vee but the tail is not as wide as a dumpster diver, and it will surf smaller waves like a dumpster diver do to the wide otuline and fuller nose, and more volume but with a bit smaller tail handle the bigger stuff better than a dumpster. THe tail gets reduced by using a a pronounced hip in the rail outline basically keeping it more "fishy" up front but allowing it to be more shortboard like in the tail. Speed and floatation in the nose, performace in the tail where you can lay it on rail. If interested in calling TOmmy just PM me i can get you his number
I picked up a Roberts Black Dump Truck a few months back and it's a great board. It's very similar to the DD, but it's about $130 cheaper. Good volume up front to catch waves easily, but still narrow enough to be snappy. My personal 2 cents is unless you are really, really good, stay away from the Neckbeard with that funky tail.Originally Posted by Obpmem
FWIW, my go to board on everything that's smaller than chest high is my 5'6" CI Motorboat. Such a great board and super loose and fun. Has the tail of the Flyer so it's got that performance to it. I'm a sucker for Merrick boards, price notwithstanding, but if I was buying a new board I would check out the Roberts at BNW. In fact, I bought my Roberts instead of a Dumpster Diver.
i have one of these as well...the "trash picker" he's calling it. but to say it's a copy is to sell the shape short a bit...while mine is the same dimensions as a stock dumpster diver, 6'0"x20 1/4"x2 5/8", the nose is a bit wider than the dd, the rails are different, & the bottom contour is different. like rob said, the stock bottom contour on the dd is a straight single. wynn has put a single to double w/ vee on his stock version. i got mine custom from him & it features a double barrel concave thru the entire length of the board. the rails of the dd are really thick & full, where as wynn tends to foil his out a bit more. it removes some of the volume, but gives the board more bite into the wave face, something that's much nicer to have here in nj where our waves tend to be a bit steeper than your average so. cal. break. wynn is also making a lot of them w/ the 5 box option, so it can be ridden as a tri or a quad. i've pretty much settled on a twin w/ trailer set up on mine. lots of drive & a loose tail.
but yea, a lot of shapers are jumping on the "short, wide, & stubby" bandwagon now...merrick didn't start the ball rolling, but he sure did popularize it! my wynn is a great board...that said, i've been so utterly stoked on my 5'8" fishcuit this summer that even my longboard isn't seeing as much water time as it normally does...
to Rob G and NJsurfer42, if you dont mind, but how much did you pay for your wynn "Dumpster Diver". I would definitely be up for having Wynn or somebody local shape me something for my next stick and wondering how much of a price difference you guys are really paying for these. i guess it can vary if you go with one of his stock boards vs custom and obviously color and art can jack the price, but im just talking board without all of the
add-ons. and speaking of stock, does he even have anything stock or is it all custom order.
