When I was studying karate in college, my instructor told a story about how he made a mistake in his kata (form). He was banging through it so hard and doing such a good job that none of the judges noticed. Once he finished the judges gave their score (all 9's) and his instructor stood up and said in Japanese/broken English "Minus point. He make mistake." This caused my instructor to lose the competition, but was the honorable thing to do. I follow the same philosophy. My son would not want me as a judge in his heat because I would be overly critical of his technique. Its better to lose with honor than to win in disgrace.
