Why do surfers wear wetsuits in the summer? The water has been about bathtub warm even at daybreak. Has to be a tad on the warm side- Kind of fun yesterday at Chincoteague Island. Call it 3, maybe 4- super glass- good at low tide. For the young lady on the shortboard, you Flat Rip- good as anyone out there. Has to be the best female surfer I ever seen in the water.
I guess they like scab-free nipples.
same here man. i dont wear wetsuits untill october maybe early november if it stays warm enough. whatever. they are the ones roasting and complaining out there
If the air is real warm and it's sunny i wont wear it...otherwise i'll wear it. 2 mill short sleeve full with holes in it..not all that warm anyway.
much of this week the air was really chilly when i was paddling out...1mil top was the call. lost of guys in fullsuits & short arm fulls too though. definitely not cold enough for that, but chilly w/out a top for sure.
I don't get into a wetsuit unless it's below about 65. I surfed Florida a couple years ago, the water felt like warm bathwater and every single person down there were wearing wetsuits, it was bizarre! I guess different people have different tolerances for cold water, but in no way do i consider 65-70 degree water cold. just my 2 cents.
I think most of the time, most of the year on either coast (minus the SE), wearing boardies to surf is nothing more than a novelty. Seriously, I don't shed my rubber until its 72-75 degree range, and even then, who are we kidding, that is NOT bathtub water. The water in CA doesnt get over 72, ALMOST EVER!!!! So, I actually havent gone to boardies in over 2 years out here... Its setpember, im a 3/2. I was in a 3/2 in August... The water temps are like 68 right now... That is NOT warm....
I just think back home, I trunked it more because the water goes from 40 degrees, up to the 70s, so it just SEEMS like its warm....
Especially with todays wetsuti technology. My winter suit feels like its painted on. I dont feel restricted at all.... I really dont have any more modility in boardies. So why would I trunk it?
I would only trunk it in high 60s low 70s if I only plan on being out for like 30-40 minutes. I dont know about you guys, but my sessions are much closer to 2 hours than 30 minutes... So complete comfort is a must for me... And trunking it just aint comfortable.....
below 73, and im in rubber... no doubt... call me a wuss or whatever, but I am only out there to catch as many waves as possible and do my think... Shivering and paddling around for warmth is not an option.....
I always ask my buddies who trunk it all summer what the fu** they are thinking... Most of them are marines and military types, so they are usually trying to be the Alpha Male everywhere we go... But deep down, them fools know its cold!
everybody is entitled to their own opinion zach, in no way am i trying to be hard core by wearing boardies, i just know what i like to surf in best and it's boardies and a rashguard. if it was up to me I'd never wear a wetsuit, but that's just me and considering where I live I have to wear one most of the year...and I usually stay in the water for 3+ hours.
Yeah, I feel u. I was just generalizing. I just think as surfers, no matter where we live we r all trying to emulate the tropical, island lifestyle, so the thought of trunking it is on everyones mind. I just think a lot of guys shed way too soon. Now, august, in oc md when a hurricane isn't on the way, I'm trunking it no doubt. But most julys in oc, I'm still cold unless the sun is really beating.
And I did notice that in all the sick irene footage I've seen, everyone north of wilmington had a full suit on. I saw one guy trunking it mitchells photos...
But every pro crew I saw that was in jersey on surf business to get shacked on film, were all wrapped in rubber. A lot of cold water filled in, but still. All novelty aside, the chargers were wrapped up in rubber and ready to handle business
I completely agree dude. I love trunking it when I can but for me thats not until the water is like 75 or warmer and the air is warm. Maybe its because I'm skinny but I'd rather be comfortable for the entire session then shivering in trunks. I trunked it a few times this summer in NJ but was usually in my spring suit since I get on it at dawn and its a little cooler out.
The water definitely cooled down into probably the mid 60s for the Irene swell, I was perfect in a 3/2 but I guess its just different for everyone (almost everyone I surfed with had a fullsuit on though). I do love taking trips down to southern NC and surfing in trunks though, its just nice to be free of all the rubber and not have to change in and out of a suit.
For me its all about comfort and whatever will allow me the longest session and unfortunately in NJ that means some rubber most of the time...
