I love reading posts when I am bored at work. However as some folks have stated and others stormed of the forum page (only to come back a week later), the quality of posts is down considerably. Ugh.... Wave Jet x 4, quad x 4, costa rica x 20, ding repair x 10,000, this weekend x 1 million. So I used the search function , like so many others do not, and saw nothing on the topic so here is my attempt to inject some interesting conversation back into the forum. Who is an icon of surfing? To you who best represents what a surfer is or the type of surfer you most identify with? We are all different... some old timers... some grom... some \"lets make surfing a sport\"... some resent attempts to make surfing a gay fashion show. Stipulations:
1. NO KELLY OR LAIRD (we know they are the best in their respective niche)
2. Can be from any era but nothing ancient no .... Duke references
3. Can be local
4. Defend your answer
Lets hear it.........................

Jose Angel ... He's from the greg noll era but was twice as crazy. He used to paddle into the biggest set waves at Waimea bay and then just step off his board in the worst possible spot, just to experience the wipeout, and he would come up laughing every single time.

NICE!!!!! Good one epidemicepic. Was not familiar with Angel. Bio and photos certainly back the claim. njsurfer42- Curren is one of my favorites as well... not much talk but his surfing says it all for him....just won the ISA world masters. Dude, early 90s \"search Curren\" on the Skip Frye retro or the rocket fish in Indo (years before it was cool) & first time at J-Bay (on a quad a decade and a half before it was cool) ...awesome. Definitely crosses generations. For a those that have watched ....lost videos over the years, no one (Kelly or themselves included) is above ridicule except Curren. With the exception of \"...lost at sea\", I'm fairly certain his surfing has made an appearance in every video. The very same company that for years told us to \"tear down our idols\"... just not Curren 'cuz he's BA.

Damn I'd never heard of him before but that Jose Angel guy was the man. I'd definitely have to say my surfing icon is Jack Johnson. Yes you heard it right. He was about to be professional surfer and he was the youngest guy to ever be invited to the Pipe Masters event until he screwed his face up when he got pounded into the reef in the final. He decided not be a pro surfer but make surf movies and music instead. He really caught a huge break when Thicker than Water's soundtrack blew up and his career started from there. How sick is that to have surfing influence and pretty much start your career. Now he's living the life. Not only is a great surfer, he is an incredible person as well. Whenever he goes on tour he usually just donates all the proceeds to charity because he doesn't want/need the money. definitely one of my favorite surfers and humans on the planet.
Video says it all.

Gary 'Kong' Elkerton. guy was about as far from 'soul' as you can get and dominated the wave.
Locally (to OCMD), guys named Rusty Hagen and Chris Tilghman. Total regulators but would help the respectful. Both were huge influences.
Forgot Jay Reale. Was a huge help when I was just a newb.

Will Allison. Known him my whole life. He still rips, still shapes awesome boards and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He is one of Wrightsville's best known icons.
Here is a short bio on him
