Testing for marijuana use should be completely banned from every aspect of our society, job market and all. Any drug that enhances your ability to perform should be tested for in sports, but believe me smoking the cali weed does not enhance performance haha, at least it does not enhance mine.

I would rather have everyone do whatever they want in surfing. I couldn't care less if a pro is stupid enough to take performance enhancing drugs or likes to get high. As far as "drug use" being bad for the sport I say good, finally something to slow down the rampant marketing of what I consider more a lifestyle than a sport. I would give anything for the days when parents would refuse to let their kids start surfing for fear they would fall in with the wrong kind of people. Back in the 70's there were parents that didn't like their kids hanging around with me and my friends because we surfed, lol, those were the days.

I know everyone here hates my opinion about this, but since I have nothing to lose, I'm gonna strike to the heart of the matter. The opinions here serve well as an analogy for the bigger picture of why this great country is heading straight for the toilet. "Who cares about what the pro's do?" is the mantra repeated over and over again in this thread, with comparisons to other pro athletes. Their example DOES matter because the kids look up to them.

72% of high schooler's graduated last year, and we celebrated this as an improvement.* While I think this is pitiful, I acknowledge that the raw numbers hint at improvement. Comparisons with other countries show these numbers do not even begin to tell the whole story. We lag behind just about everyone in the developed world on actual PROFICIENCY (ie, what do you actually KNOW) tests.

What do these two things have to do with each other? It's a cultural message through which we tell our kids that you can smoke dope and act like a general a-hole, and life will pretty much work out okay. Maybe you can even go to Indo and get barreled a few times a year. The surf industry supports this idea and markets it to our kids and young adults. Unfortunately, life doesn't actually work out for 99% of us (no pun intended). What does happen is that the young ones idolize people like Dane Reynolds, Kanye West, and (name your NBA rock star). They strive toward this life and blow off school and learning in general. We as a society encourage this through either ignorance or apathy. Then we arrive to our present stage: uneducated, approaching bankruptcy, and with little reason to expect any improvement. Happy? You can blame the govt. or corporations, and that's fine because they too have played a role. Above all, however, we have to blame ourselves and each other because at this point the big wigs have no power to make things better. The fact that we simply don't make the connections between all the sh!t happening right now is disturbing.

*I'm not posting links for these stats. Use google. It takes about 9 seconds.

    dude, like seriously dude

if California and Hawaii move from medical use to straight legalization, would you still test for THC? should such testing then only apply in areas outside of those two states?

I'm afraid the connection between poor test scores and ideas that this somehow translates to telling kids that they can smoke dope and act like general a holes is tenuous at best. The multicultural and fractured nature of our country's population compared to others that are compared to ours, not to mention the lack of funding for education especially public compared to those countries, has a lot to do with these issues. The more you prohibit something, the more attractive it is. In some of these very countries, the drinking age is as low as 16. Are there alcohol issues there? Certainly. Do they still kick our asses in test scores? Yes they do.

Connection? Is there a spate of animal abuse ever since a major football player got busted in a dogfighting ring? If not, the cause-and-effect relationship between what pros do and what children are inclined to do should be examined a little more thoroughly.

In the meantime, these are adults that make their own decisions. Perhaps if we talked to our OWN children as parents and explain why people make bad decisions, that might have more impact than allowing public figures to dictate to our children what is acceptable or acceptable behavior.

    Isn't this where…

the whole medically legalization in california is bogus because it;'s still illegal under federal law to sell it...that's why all their stores keep getting kicked to the curb
