I really think this country is digging into a deep, deep hole, and has fiscal and foreign policy problems that are so bad if they arent solved really soon, the hole will be so deep it will take decades or longer to solve, and will cause a lot of pain. The next presidential and congressional elections are going to be really critical and few if any politicians are willing to make necessary but unpopular decisions because the whole process of governing has been corrupted by obsessions over winning the PR-perception battle, media coverage, constant campaigning, and constant fund raising. Any serious attempt at problem solving goes out the window. Just look at the last 72 hours in congress.

I guess the point i was trying sarcastically, but unsuccessfully, to make is that these kinds of flame throwing slogans are at the core of what is wrong. They are VERY useful in winning PR battles, and getting ratings for MSNBC, FOX and the like. Using those reference points in a debate brings the discussion down to the gutter politics level that has gotten us to where we are.

You don't need to be the smartest guy in the room to be president anymore, yes you need to be an above average intellect BUT, what you really need is a set of PRINCIPLES which guide your decision making process. The world/governance is so complicated now a days, presidents have slew of aids and advisors schooled in there particular discipline to help the president. It's then when he makes his decisions based on his PRINCIPLES. If by smartest guy you mean Obama...you're just being silly. I'd put Ron Paul and or Gingrich against Obama any day. Alot of mass murderers and sociopaths would be considered genial...but what they lack is a proper foundation....a guiding set of good PRINCIPLES. Obama has his own principles...he's a socialist at heart. Has he been able to enact all his "dreams of his father"? NO. Do not fool yourself into thinking that he wouldn't if he could...fortunately there's been some backlash to his attempt to govern us based on his PRINCIPLES. He is only coming toward the center because it's an election year..it's a survival instinct.

if providing proof of your identity (after the most corrupt presidential election in our history) is 'blatant voter intimidation' I wonder what he thinks about the black panthers with clubs standing outside the polls telling the "crackers" they can't vote is?
