I love surfing alone. I took a trip to Costa Rica alone because none of my buds could get the time off. I spent a week pullin 2 a days exploring breaks all by myself. One of my all time favorite trips. Thinking of doing a trip to PR solo soon.

Its normal to be sketched out. I really have only had a few dozen true solo sessions in San Diego when I lived there, simply because of the crowds…. But since I move to Hilton Head Island, I would say 4 out of 5 session that I have here are solo…. I have a blast, but I do always get this eerie feeling when I go out. Not only am I the only surfer out, I am really the only person in the water on the whole island… Its all good though. I usually surf for like 1.5 hours and then take off. I always feel great… It certainly creeps me out sometimes… I actually get stoked when I see another person out in the winter… There is really only 1 or 2 spots on the island, so not much to choose from… HHI is notoriously sharky, just like all of the Carolinas… I actually see more dolphins here than I did in CA and I saw them a lot there… Every session I see dolphins, and its weird because they are usually right in the lineup in about 3-4 feet of water…. The water on HHI is always murky in the winter from all the freshwater runoff and the marshes, so you really cant see anything…. But yeah, its normal to be sketched out…. I always feel safety in numbers…. Like this past Sunday, I was the first guy out alone as soon as the storm passed and the wind switched offshore… It was about 3 feet and fun… I was out alone, basically laying on my fish with my feet up…. After 45 minutes, about 8-10 guys paddled out at random peaks… Then I sat normal on my board with my feet down… Safety in numbers… Not to mention when you get a sick wave, at least there are some other people to appreciate it.

When death is close by we all feel it out there. Unless your drunk.
