    Avon NC, Early May

Whats up people? I am heading to Avon NC during the first week of May. I am hoping to get the inside scoop on the place.

    Any good restaurants/bars?

How is the surf right at the pier? Looks like it could be pretty decent but there isn't too much info out there about it....I am not looking to blow up anyone's secret spots but I am assuming there are some surfable waves in the immediate area? May not have access to a car for a lot of the trip so I might not be able to head north/south to some of the more well know areas.

Also, what are you guys wearing in early may...3/2? Nothing? I am assuming boots/gloves are no longer needed.

Thanks in advance! And feel free to PM me if you don't want to post in here.

slow down!!! lets not blow up jersey, we don't want to mislead the guy... the water is too cold to surf in jersey.

Youd better pack at least your 3-2 and bring gloves and boots. The water temps fluctuate a lot during this time of year due to upwelling. They can literally drop 15 degrees in a days time. Ive surfed the first part of june down there before with boots and gloves. As far as the surf your guess is as good as mine. The last few years weve had decent swell towards the end of may in the mid atlantic area.

list of things to bring: boards for all types of waves, neoprene for all temps of water, all your fishing gear and a spare liver.

Ocean temps can really fluctuate on the OBX, especially between the east and south facing beaches and with upwelling. Other than surfing, fishing and hanging with your friends, I wouldn't look for much nightlife that down there this time of year.

The Avon pier can be good and likely not as crowded as other spots. Don't expect much in the way of night life or bars - most peole party at their rental houses. May is still pretty quiet as the main rental season has not kicked in yet. But the quietness of the place can be really cool. If the surf is flat and the wind is blowin - you could learn to kite board on the sound - there's a number of good shops and places for lessons. As others have said, the ocean temps can vary widely and will drop after a strong south wind. If the wind goes north and there's surf - make sure you can get a car to get to the south side of the island. Otherwise chances are you'll get fun surf out in front of your house.

If the trend continues dont look for any quality surf on your trip. Like Swabby said you can check Real Watersports for kiteboarding and jet ski rentals if no surf....Froggy Dog is a good place to eat. You can surf next to the pier hassle free...
