I'm trying to plan a trip to Puerto Rico with some buddies this winter and I've never been. I'd appreciate it if anyone has some good advice for places to stay on the beach. I'm not looking for resorts- more the laid back/chill type places.
We're probably flying into SJ because it's cheaper, but will be willing drive the 2 hrs. towards Rincon/Aguadilla.
If you're looking for a hotel with bar and resturant try Villa Cofresi, I've stayed there off and on several times over the last 25 years. Try the piratas at the pool bar. In Sandy Beach, try Pippons, it's a small apartment building with 1 and 2 bedroom units with kitchen. You can check out the waves from the balcony and walk to surf or drive to other breaks.I'm pretty sure both places have websites.
Waves can be great in March, however it does become less consistent then January/ February. Still the best location is going to be somewhere around Rincon. There are many places to surf, but I would start at places like Maria's or Domes. Of coarse they will be the most crowded. Try and avoid holiday weeks or weekends, especially President's day week - half of New York will be there then.
If you surf places over by Sandy Beach or up north like Wilderness across from the airport the crowds will be much less. Maria's will be ground zero, unless of coarse if it's giant, then the crowd always seems to thin out a bit.
Yeah, we're staying the whole week right next to Parking Lot, so I figure I've got Antonio's, Parking Lot and Sandy Beach as options within 5 min walking distance and I'll keep an eye on Domes for a day when the crowd is thin enough to be tolerable. Plus I don't get loaded every night on vacation so that I can manage to get up at the crack of dawn and surf a few waves by myself before everyone gets over their hang-overs. Thats how I manage Lavallette summers.
