Shattered my collar bone, 5 days in the hospital, 8inch plate, 14 screws, 4 months out of the water. I feel ya pain....
i actually broke my collarbone in some nasty shorebreak last july and was out for 2 months as well. miserable. and in terms of what i did while i waited... watched the summer pass me by.
I broke my left thumb in Vermont snowboarding back in 98. 4 pins and a shorter thumb..
ouch ,,, sorry to heaR IT ,,, get well soon...
Broke my collarbone as a kid on a rope swing. Broken femur playing football . The most recent was a broken foot skating a mini ramp.... I just hung out on the beach, shot video and gave up skating .
I was just out with an elbow issue, I say use the time to make your surfing better. Look for better techniques, board designs, and normally I would say shape a board, but sounds like that might not really be an option. I researched paddling techniques that might reduce stress on my elbow. I figured it my keep me in the water longer if I am a little smarter. Good luck!
Took a softball to the eye on Saturday... Big, puffy, black and blue eye, with stitches. Will be out for a bit too.
I've been sidelined plenty before... If your into taking photos/videos of your friends, that is a fun way to be a part of a good swell.
Most important thing, is make sure you are completely healed before jumping back in again. The older you get, the more you realize you have to take care of your body as much as possible - which means being careful with injuries.
Yes I broke the outside bone in my hand several years ago. It was in a splint and went back out after about 3 weeks and rebroke it just paddling. Ouch. I was now out an additional 6 months and it was slow to reknit. Lesson learned: listen to you Doc and so much for macho.
yeah, broke my nose surfing, went out a week later, collided with a friend in the shore break and totally re-broke it. Worst pain I have ever experienced and the doc said that if I did it again that i would look like michael jackson because he would have to remove the bridge. After hearing that I stayed out of the water for the full 10 weeks. SUCKED.
