just a couple words of advise... in general people dont like talking about surf spots on a public forum... if you haven't realised, many of the dedicated local surfers are protective about their spots and generally dont like to advertising them - no matter how good or bad the spots really are. The best advice is to strike up a friendly conversation in the lineup, and slowly learn the local scene through experience and experimentation one swell at a time.
Well stated CW and Micah, I was happy to get welcomed to said spot and love surfing with the crew. This old man needed a new home away from home.

You DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT OLDER GUYS GIVING YOU CRAP either. When I was younger I got crap from OLDER people all the time. I remember my buddy Josh Coffield getting attacked and half drowned by a Bethany Local when we were younger and Josh just took it like a man and kept surfing. Thats what you get when you are little and usless. Get over it you wuss, the old guys beat up the little guys. Thats what happens. I never saw such crying in my life. Go to the Cape Hatteras lite house when it's good and JUST TRY TO GET A WAVE. You won't, cause you are a little wuss! Same thing here, the old guys rule and when its firing and full on throttle...I'm 28 and I would expect a local like Ken Savage to drop in on me. He's the old guy-I'm the young guy-I am not a wusss like you-so I take it like a man. Big guys rule, little guys drule??? HAHAHAHAHA, it's all just a game. have fun little guy, and like Micah said, get the vibe and get the waves! Micah remebers those days when we would get crap, the good ole days? Gotta love the shrine! I am one of the older guys in the lineup & for years I have passed on some knowledge, tips, lessons, etc while in the water for waves or relaxing with my wife & kids @ the beach & me just goofing around in the water. I love doing it as long as they are respectful & having fun.
By being respectful, I mean not only in the water towards other riders, but to the families on the beach & with their kids in the water. If I am in the water or on the beach with my kids or there is another family with young children within earshot of me & someone or group is letting the curse words fly, I will only ask you once to watch your language regardless of your age. I am not necessarily offended by the cursing, but the lack of respect towards the others around the person doing it.
If someone has that little respect of the others around them, then their actions in the water riding waves is not far behind. This type of additude is way more the case now than it was years ago when everyone in the lineup did know each other. You now have way more people in the lineup, internet access & cell phones to avoid actually having to go & check it without having to get out of bed, only to share the same amount of rideable waves & shoreline. The older guys don't feel they need to provide another easy route to the breaks when they actually had to do it on their own without such luxuries.
The older or regular locals in the lineup will always get the choice waves, that's how it always has been & will always be. Don't expect it to change, because locals don't want it to.
I've been riding in the same area for about 4 years now, and while it's not the best around, I still feel the less light thats shown on it the better. It's simple and plain... crowds suck. People grow protective over thier home-breaks, and thats cool with me, because I think if you are out at the same spot all year, big or small waves, you earn that right. Just the way it is... and the more people that start riding waves, the worse this will get. If your friendly with people in the water, you'll get invited to different spots in time. Thats the best way to go about it.
Jimbo - you just gotta take it from older guys. Put yrself in their shoes, if they've been surfing for 20 years they've seen alot of people come and go... but they've stayed loyal and committed. Thats the difference, and thats what gives them the right. They went thru the same thing. But you gotta respect them, no matter what. If not you'll have a hard time with a lot more than bodyboarding. Since your young the best thing to do is stay quiet and humble...
I see what all of you are saying. It's like being a freshman in high school. Everyone picks on you untill you make your way up. I never intended to say that I don't respect any of the older surfer. I respect them more than anyone else. If they never stuck with the sport, I would not be typing this message right now. O, you guys talk about how much you haited when older people made fun of you 20 years ago, so why would you continue this process. I used to get crap freshmen year in high school and now I am a Junior. I am nice to all of the new kids at my school and I help them in any way I can. Think about that. Peace

That is the same thing I was thinking.
SS is fun, I try to stay away from the competitive days. Why not get it when it is breaking, but not cut throat competition. It really is a Great spot.
Old guys are ONLY annoying if they hotdog all day on their 10 ft boards but that doesnt apply to SS does it
I see what they mean. It isnt fair if locals wait for "the day" for a few months, and if the rare flawless day comes the commuter can come down and get the same waves at the same spot as they do without all the dirty work in between.
Hopefully I can get there more regularly on good days to work my way up.
