We do get cold winters here.....not always and of course not like up North. Water temps usually in the low to mid 40's (SOBX) during winter months (low30's at OBX) but when your summer water is mid 80's.......well you see where I'm coming from and yes especially in Jan-Feb there is alot of travel to PR, CR and Nica from people around here.

It's not NE cold but 40's water temp and air temps in the 30's is still cold and something about the climate really does effect your tolerance for cold. "Thinning your blood"- It's amazing how cold 40-50 feels when you're not used to it anymore. Lot's of guys just don't think it's worth it once the 3/2 needs to be replaced with a 4/3, boots glove and hood- all that gear cost enough to fly to PR or CR and you can pack a lot of waves into one of those trips.
ten years ago I heard an older guy mention what he called the 100 degree rule: if the air and water temp didn't add up to 100 it was too cold. Of course at the time I thought he was old and soft- now: "not so much" (in best Borat voice)
After almost 20 years in the South East when it gets in below fifty outside and I consider it bitter cold it amazes me that growing up in NY I was outside all day playing and walking to school when it was in the thirties and below.

I have my own rule; its called the good surf rule. Here it is (my secret), if there's good surf I go out no matter what.
