They still store used material there and as soon as they drop another $300Mil into fixing the cooling system that already cost that much to upgrade, it will be online again. I'd like to see the plant shut down permanently and all the spent fuel shipped somewhere like, I dunno where do we store spent fuel? I hear there's some cheap real estate in Nevada. Maybe Superman could just throw it into the sun, as long as Lex Luther doesn't get a hold of some stem cells. We could finally paint the two cooling towers as the original engineers obviously truly envisioned that they should be, as two gigantic breasts jutting out at a killer break.

Special thank to Japan for their mishandling of Fukashima. Lying. Downplaying it. Under regulating it. Lying more to save face. Now the whole pacific is filled with radioactive fish. What about all the radiation America released into the ocean in the 50's with nulclear weapons testing? That's why they test the fish in the first place. Don't just blame Japan, chalk it up to everyone sucking.

while i agree with you there, its 2012. The world as a whole did some pretty ridiculous things in the 50s. I mean, I am far more ashamed of the American South in the 50s than I am about the military. Im more concerned with us nuking thousands of innocent people than the weapons testing. Im more upset about the weapons "using" back then than the affect on fish. We killed a sh** load of people.... Thats war for you... Put point being, we pumped the brakes on nukes after that.... not worth any of the repercussions.

Not that I'm disagreeing with u about the dangers of fission reactors on fault zones, nor the response thus far from TEPCO; but the levels of cesium 137 they found in the Blue Fin are comparable to the level of naturally occurring cesium 134. The only difference is that one isotope is man made and the other isn't, hence the reason they detected it. I wouldn't start taking iodine pills quite yet. I don't eat much Magoro anyway, just because there are only 10% of the total population left that there was 25 years ago, not cause I'm worried about radiation poisoning. Quit eating Blue Fin for that reason, switch to Albacore. You know they irradiate dairy products in this country, right?
I do think they should decommission San Onofre. The Rose Canyon fault is currently at the longest interval between 7.0 or greater magnitude earth quakes since the last ice age. That's based on a UCSD study done back in '02 or '03. When I read the survey, we (San Diego) were at 187 years since the last big one. The next longest interval was about 155 years. Rose Canyon always have given me the creeps. Ride under the 52 - I5 junction in the wee hours of the morning, I always get a chill.

i feel you. For sure... We dont have all the data on the CA coast that we do for Japan... When this first happened, I did a simple Wiki search of Tsunamis in the town where Fukashmi and it was mind boggling. It showed that the place was literally wiped off the map a half dozen times... The exact same scenario... Huge quake... Town gone. Every time... So while it was stupid to put it there, it was even more ridiculous to not have proper safety procedures in order... If you simply cant shut off the fission of nuclear reaction within your facility for like 3 MONTHS????? You probably should operate one.... I was shocked when I really found out how that stuff all works. Yeah, the one by trestles works the same way, and it too would have to sit for months and cool off if that happened, so lets shut if down.... Ive heard INSANE sh** from guys that used to surf out there decades ago.... Feelings of almost being shocked in the water and having strange affects on your state of mind... I dont think that place has always been "safe" at all either... So we should all be addressing the truth of this.... They have facilities in the Tornado Alley as well, and they too would have similar issues... But come on... Lets learn from Japan... If that is the outcome, we need to be realistic about it...

Also, what I heard in the UT after the Japan Tsunami was that the difference in the regions are that the fault line in SD is on land and the faults off Japan are under water, thus eliminating the Tsunami issues with the dangerous zones out here... We could worry about Damage to San Onofre from a quake, but not a Tsunami... The fault line could damage it, but in a completely different way... Again, im not a master on the subject, but am i correct in those statements? They have a bunch of cool stuff about the fault lines and history down at the museums in Balboa... They do the free tuesdays for locals and you can check it out for free.. Pretty crazy.... Although, my Dad works for NOAA and he told me that the most dangerous north american fault line is the one that runs from Maine to Georgia... And although its less active, it was the most powerful and it will at some point show signs of life again...
