In my opinion it is EASIER to paddle out with a longboard- unless it is over head or storm surf. You just have to be smart about it- time out your paddle out. Wait for the set to come thru and when there is no waves on the horizon- start paddling. If you time it out well, it only take a matter of seconds to get outside- since the board paddles much faster. Most times you don't even get your hair wet. I have found that turtling the board can be a real lose of time- unless your taking a huge wave on the head. Its better just to man up and take it head on- its not that bad, you can time it out and hit the wave at just right part that you will get right thru. its so much fun
