I always use sunscreen unless wearing a full suit. Stupid not to, I've known people die from skin cancer in their 30s, and it was not pleasant to watch. I figure a few minutes a day is worth it. That being said finding a good one at a reasonable price is hard. Banana boat used to make a "surf" one that was quite good but thick as hell. Some burn the eyes with sweat and water so it's hard to find a good one with the right balance of protection and comfort. The spray ones are crap.

Yeah man, I've had 4 "non-symmetrical" melanoma growths removed that were caused by being out in the sun (surfing, fishing, etc) The first 30 years of my life I never wore sunscreen. The last 20 I've been trying but who the hell wants to get out of the water when there are good waves to re-apply? The irony is that I make sure my kids are covered in the stuff and I make them paddle in to re-apply. I need to get them out of the water anyway because they think it's funny now to snake the old man. Don't worry if you are ever surfing in Sea Isle or OCNJ and see a crazy looking old guy with a big beard strangling a tall lanky kid with a blond mop top like Homer strangles Bart, it's just me and my oldest.

I use Waterman's sunscreen. It's pretty expensive (about $20-25 for 8 oz depending on where you get it) but lasts a long time in the water and dries clean, no oily residue. I wear it fishing and it stays even if I'm sweating like a pig.

Believe it or not, this stuff is good... stays on, does NOT drip into your eyes and sting, and is cheap, especially if you clip the coupon and send it in...

First off Doug, just out of curiousity, do you surf or are you just some research analyst for J&J or PF looking for a really cheap way to get a few data points? If you surf cool, but seriously survey monkey?! That's what C-level execs throw at code monkies like me so they can claim that they have "gravity free communications". Jayzuz, man where's the cherries? Offer us some free schwag for the effort and I might take your survey. You wants me to clicks the mousie for freeze!? HAR HAR, There's no such thing as a free lunch or data Doug! Grass, Gas or A$$, no one get's a pass. That being said, I turn to the immortal words of Mary Schmich (I always thought this was Kurt Vonnegut): "Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97:

    Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now."

It's really hard to put on your back by yourself. I've gotten the spray kinds but they dont seem to last long, and i always miss spots with them.
