I'm not from Long Beach and don't consider myself a local there, but I surf there a fair amount and haven't really experienced much of this vibe at all. There are a couple of jerks out there, but no worse than anywhere else I've surfed. If you're not a kook, have some idea of what you're doing, and treat the locals with respect, you're not going to run into any issues.
This is true; a lot of the regulars (especially in the early morning) are very friendly. I've seen some guys get reamed hard though over petty issues though... some people don't know how to enjoy the sport it seems and instead get their fix threatening others.

Fact is, most people that are rude on the interwebs to people they don't know don't have the sack to pull that crap on someone in person. Internet tough guys most likely would get stomped with a quickness. Don't be that dude, that is all...
I've definitely seen this too, but it isn't specific to LB, it's just mutant male surf behavior in general.
what i learned over the years,99% of surfers everywhere are friendly and have a great vibe.its only on the internet they talk sheet and act tough,locals only.i hate that term so much,i dont like to surf where i live because the waves suck.thats why we go on surf trips.i wouldntgo on a surf trip,if i thought locals wouldnt let me surf.you dont excel at surfing,if u only surf your area.treat others as u want to be treated,thats how i was raised.im a quiet guy and most of the time i dont talk in the lineup.dont be an a-hole n drop in on others,or sit on the inside waitin for someone to mow u over,and youll be fine!

RESPECT--give it you get it. drop in or snake and you get what you deserve. and "forman" the early a.m. crowd is friendly just for that reason. we respect one another-if you're getting up early enough to be there at sunrise, your gonna be surfing w/ a crew that wants the same thing as you... a couple of nice rides without some a-hole dropping in on them and getting your day started the right way , with a smile and some stoke. Leave all the Macho, king of the beach, big kahuna attitude home. don't burn a local and try saying good morning to someone and i bet you have a much better time. I've also seen the flipside here and seen dudes chased to their car (who deserved it). all it takes is a little RESPECT
What you guys in grade school. Who cares, nobody cares. Just use common sense and stay out of the way. Take your balls out of your momma's purse and act like you know. Well if you don't know, now you know N$gga!
