Just curious. when do the swells typically start to get smaller into the Spring? Is it possible to have at least a 4-5 foot decent swell summer, or is that not typical for central NJ?

There are some general patterns for the Mid Atlantic region, but it is much more random than many other places around the world.

As for your question, average wave heights definitely decrease in the summer months. May/June are the transitions months, and July and August can be dreadfully small. This is not to say there are not decent swells in the summer, but just not as frequent as other months. During the summer months, you will generally see a handful of 4-5' good swells. And, of course larger tropical and nor'easter swells are possible as well - just not the norm.

magicseaweed is extremly inaccurate. One minute the waves are 8 feet tall the next their 2. There measurements are not even close.

May be swellinfo's time to post something on the history of swells in months/days. Maybe even detailed info on some "KNOWN" spots? Would DEFINATELY be better than thos other trash websites out there....magicseaweed ahahahaha lol.

extreme sponge we can get 4-5 swells anytime of the year but by june-july the time between them grows sometimes the time between them is the whole summer, last year in april we had a northeast swell last for a week when a low sat off the coast so spring is good, it gets shaky towards mid may

Thanks for the info...much appreciated. We are both only into our first year of serious sponging/surfing and appreciate the "veteran" info. Loving the winter swells as they slide through and always looking to learn from experienced surfers/spongers.
