It's pretty obvious why you don't talk up surfing spots. There's fishing forums I belong to that will ban you for "spot-burning" and I totally agree with the train of thought. In the days of the internet, there's no such thing as legwork or learning for yourself. Sure many don't abuse it, but there's tons more who pay no attention to wind, tide, swell direction, sand bars, etc... they just consult SwellInfo or Surfline or whatever. Gone are the days of scoping out sandbars at low tide (both fishing and surfing) as well as actually checking the surf (for many internet abusers).
This is bad for many reasons. For one, there are many beginners on websites like this, and they might be better served if they found their own spots to surf... just until they are better and can handle navigating a crowded lineup where the waves are at a higher premium. For another... who wants to get invaded at their home break once internet word gets around that their spot was going off on a certain day? It happens and is a royal pain in the ass. When I moved to where I live and was ignorant of which spots were which and was trying to drive around and scope things out, the best advice wasn't, "go to street A or B on a south or north" it was "pick a jetty". If a place is working or holding a great wave consistently... go tell your surfing buddies. Don't blast it on the ridiculous internet.

for the record... I don't think that this thread was intended as a legit topic. I think it was sort of like, hey what can I post that will get everyone fired up and posting about.... while I sit waaaaaaaay outside and pick off the best waves on my log. lol.

Guy paddles out in October wearing a full suit that looked like it was for winter, gloves, booties and a hood. Water was 65 and so was the air. Most were sporting spring suits a few were trunkin it. He also had on a helmet and a backpack. I asked him, “Hey man, what’s in the packback?” He looked at me all feral child, horror show and says “FOOOOOOD.” He then proceeded to stink-bug 2 to 3 footers straight through the kids playing on the inside, right into the beach on his 8’ foot NSP funboard.

Pardon my word choice. Looking back it was not the best. How we can improve discussions on this site would be better.
In my opinion, there are no secret spots left anywhere. I mean, there really aren't. With Google Earth, we have nailed pretty much every nook and cranny on earth. Spending 10 years in CA surfing everyday, I will be the first to say, there are ZERO secret spots left there. Some are very "Protected", but everyone knows where they are or can do a quick google search to find them. No secrets in Santa Cruz either, regardless of what people tell you. There are places like "The Ranch" that are "PRIVATE" like all of HHI, but there are no secrets left... Luckily for CA, most of the "secret" or "protected" spots get so heavy when its on, that regardless of how easy you find it, the novice or "average" surfer would A) Probably not paddle out and B) Never get a wave when the locals are out... Too heavy and too easily out positioned by locals...
I think on the east coast as a whole, people get pissed because sand bars come and go... There are no Secrets on the east either, but some seasons, spots get great while others lie dormant, so I think a lot of locals back around here get pissed when people "blow a spot up", meaning, coming onto the forum and talking about exactly where the sand bar has been firing a few days before a good swell, and then the place they had between them and a couple friends turns into 12-15 heads.... Its no "secrets" really, its just guys getting pissed when their backyards get full because of forum talk....
I dont mind it really. Not to "Blow Spots up" but down on Hilton Head, ive kind of been jonesing for some company in the water... My last 4-5 sessions have been really fun, chest high, perfect conditions with no one out... I know it sounds crazy, but sometimes Im like, damn, can I get another surfer out here. While I enjoying taking EVERY way that hits down here, its just culture shock coming from San Diego... The swells aren't epic like this time of year back west, but that leads me into the question: "Do you take HH+" waves with 20 guys on it, or do you take waist to chest high waves, alone, able to take every one that comes in.... I miss barrels and airs, but I have been having fun on the LB and FISH for sure in between solid swells.
