Much as it pains me to say, I'm kind of with Roy on this one. The shaper can almost always offer some good advice to ANYONE, pro or not, on how to make the most his or her board's design features (in this case, even if it's just because no one has any experience riding anything similar due to the, let's call it "unique", shapes Roy is producing). And really, it was a pretty harmless sentence about moving forward on the board. Let it go. Otherwise you're just inviting Roy to state his point again, and I sure wouldn't want you to have to read another bad thing about GMac!

*Disclaimer* None of this is intended to support the logic, shapes and especially cost of Roy's boards.
I don't even like him, but you bet your ass i respect him. His accomplishments ARE greater than most certainly anyone on this forum including you, so if he rides a surfboard it is noteable, hense the entire reason Roy would want him to ride it in the first place.

I also don't like your sarcasm or your manners, your opinion holds no wright to me because you ptesented it in a rude and belittling manner. Remember the one who attempts to make others look small is in fact the small one.

On another note, I have seen/heard boards that sing when the placement of one of the fins was off. These were usually ghost shaped and/or cheap boards though. Wait...did I just almost agree with something he said??? I'll go kill myself now.
Goose, actually Roy has no basis for saying the noise is the fin hum that happens when the foil might be damaged. the videos I can hear them in... the camera is one the deck of the board and its picking up things the human ear can't hear. I have never heard the noise while surfing so its not foil error. Its something that happens when a certain speed is reached and is only a quick short lived scream that is most likely do to the board starting to plane on the surface of the water. If it were not for the camera, I'd have never heard it.
Just another case of Royboy talking out his hippie arse.

Do you think it could be a noise created by the camera housing?

Not at all. Its created from the board moving over the water at high speeds. I'll see if I can post a video that won't fire up the angst of the gopro haters, but will demonstrate the sound.... lol. If you're on clean somewhat powerfull surf your board probably makes the noise too...

All in good fun bubonic, certainly no offense intended, just offering a rare word of semi-defense for Roy because I do think he who shapes the board, knows the board. Just another day of procrastinating from work by trolling forums, but I do appreciate the passive-aggressive words of wisdom!

Well you give a pretty vague description of the sound... a sound that "the human ear can't hear" and you "have never heard the noise while surfing so its not foil error."

If it isn't fin hum you may have a small creature or fairy type thing living in your board. I've heard a lot of shapers try to trap leprechauns and fairies and stuff and actually glass them into their boards in order to make the "magic board." Often times leprechauns and fairies, etc. are not visible or audible to regular people unless they are believers. I'd chop up that fairy laden board of yours, catch that leprechaun, steal the gold and have Roy custom make you a 24' yachtboard.

these are all good thoughts! well its not so crazy that one couldnt hear it while surfing.. but when looking back at video it can be clearly heard.... the board does magnify sounds and anything attached to it that records sounds could hear it, while a person whose ears are 4 to 5 feet above has too much noise going on around him to hear it...
what I do know is that its definitly not foil error or any crazyness that Roy suggested... but upon listening to it it could be wind rushing by the camera housing (like you mentioned)... but I feel like its just noise of board traveling over water at a higher speed which is magnified through the board and thus picked up by the camera...

here's a clip... around 18 seconds you can hear it for about 2 seconds...

Actually Roy has very good reason for saying that the sound comes from a fin anomaly.

It can occur from damage or from a foiling error. The sound is exactly like that in your video clip although it can occur at various frequencies and volumes.

If you attend to the trailing edges of your fins I guarantee that it will cease.

the videos I can hear them in... the camera is one the deck of the board and its picking up things the human ear can't hear.
The sound is in the audible frequency range so it is a sound which the human ear can hear, it is however of low volume so it can't be heard when riding.

I have never heard the noise while surfing so its not foil error.

How do you come to that conclusion? Vibration due to fin anomaly can be of low or high volume.

Your video is a great example of the phenomenon.

Its something that happens when a certain speed is reached and is only a quick short lived scream that is most likely do to the board starting to plane on the surface of the water.
Sorry but that is ridiculous, since the board planes as soon as it catches the wave. Planing speed is only about 3 to 4 mph for a 9 to 10 foot board, the wave front moves faster than that so you wouldn't be able to catch the wave without planing.

Surfboard hulls don't make that noise, it's always the fins.

Do you have fin boxes? If you change your fins or fix them you'll notice the difference.

Correct. Garrett made the typical newbie mistake when riding a displacement tailed board for the first time.

He did the opposite of what i suggested and made matters worse.
