Seems like our science knows a lot about Great Whites.....but then again, do we really know shiiiite about these creatures...
"Great white sharks, like all other sharks, have an extra sense given by the Ampullae of Lorenzini which enables them to detect the electromagnetic field emitted by the movement of living animals. Every time a living creature moves, it generates an electrical field and great whites are so sensitive they can detect half a billionth of a volt. Even heart beats emit a very faint electrical pulse. If it is close enough, the shark can detect even that faint electrical pulse. Most fish have a less-developed but similar sense using their body's lateral line."
Wow,I'm sharked! Seriously this is a little concerning. Unlike most fishes that are cold blooded, white sharks are homeotherms maintaing a body temperature that is warmer than their environment. This does gives them advantages include swimming speed, oh boy just what they need. But to do this they must increase their caloric intake. Today the water temp was 37.7F just south of NE. Yesterday she was a little further south and probably in relatively warmer water. At her size, which will help her produce and maintain heat, she eats marine mammals(seals) unless she is eating something where she is but I would think within the next week to 10 days she may be visiting a beach near you just like the beach I bobbed off of in the water for 2 hours today wearing by best black seal costume.
Remember that there are only 2 white sharks tagged off of the entire east coast and I think we will all agree that the white shark population off the east coast is probably larger than 2!
Pray for surf, be safe, and let's watch where she goes. Hey, maybe there might be 1 less in the lineup next swell.
