If you can read titles then you already got the gist of things so I'll try not to waste your time. I was thinking about going with the whole "beach clean-up" club idea just to get the approval of the school, but that would require a lot of time thinking of a cleaver name so people know its a surf club but without flat-out saying "surf club." The school I go to definitely has enough surfers to support a decent sized club but someone tried this a few years back and got straight up denied (hence the need for a stealthy name). I was also thinking about finding a organization that runs contest in the NY area. Something for some of the better surfers to do together. Any other positive ideas are welcome.
for organizations i know nssa has high school team contests in the NE, as for naming club perhaps call it "Surfrider" or something along said lines where u help out at local surfrider foundation beach clean ups and events and the rest of the time u surf, would be a pretty good cover.
Call it the Some Dead Guy Highs Cool Insert Beach Name Here Club. That way you don't mention surfing. Why is that an issue anyway? Maybe contact some schools out here on the W Coast. They all have teams and clubs. Ask 'em how they convinced the administration to condone it.
Just be careful in how you approach the school admin. I approached a high school in Monmouth County as a parent and was denied immediately citing "safety issues." My suggestion, do it underground. Not a lot of them in NJ, only know of Manasquan.
if you find a teacher that surfs, that will defiently help your cause. MY school has a skii/riding club and he plans awesome day trips with good prices and good mountains. It is better because he loves riding and wants to enjoy it to. Ofcourse surf clubs are a litte diffrent but if the indirect name thing doesnt work its worth a shot. Safety is the big issue like Uncle Irish said, but i can imagine if you get enough enthusiastic people they cant ignore ya.
Unless you're trying to start a surf team, just keep it unofficial. Then you won't have to do any slight-of-hand to make it happen. You can straight get high and go surf with your friends and nobody can say ****
Try linking up with your local Surfrider Chapter. They now have a scholastic program for school clubs that associates you with the Surfrider organization. It would be hard for you school to say know if you were associated with a legit non-profit.
