If your not looking for a palace, the falcon motel is a decent place to stay for the money. 65-90 a night. tv, microwave and beds thats about it, but does have a hot shower. Its located in Buxton across from the red drum. right near the lighthouse entrance. then there is always the campground. its up to you. We hang at the falcon every time never did us wrong. good luck

I'm also trying to plan a trip in late summer... Anyone know any places to camp on the beach near a good break?

  6. If you’re camping, the Park Service has some really nice campsites and you can’t beat the rates (http://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisi...servations.htm) – used to be cheaper. The one in Frisco is nestled in some really high dunes with plenty of vegetation and is a personal favorite – great spot to catch either the east facing and south facing beaches. The one in Buxton is right near the lighthouse but the terrain is flat as a board. Doesn’t sound like a big difference but in August the humidity and the state birds (the mosquitoes) can be crippling. Frisco Woods has cabins with AC and that might be another option. Best of luck.

make sure the campground has some shade! I camped for 2 nights with a bunch of people over labor day weekend in '05 at oregon inlet and we got burned badly. by the last day we were exhausted, dehydrated and done with camping. To top it off, the sun woke us up every morning around 630am as it was too hot to sleep in the tent.
